Red face discontinuation of SLP underdrive crank damper/pulley

I bought this thing a year ago and I'm finally getting around to putting it on, when I look in SLP's newest catalog and find that they've discontinued it. What gives? Were there problems with it? I love my motor and don't want to wreck it. Does anyone have the instructions they can fax me? How about belt recommendations?

Some pullies would cause false KR. Different from car to car.

There were a lot of problems with the SLP crank pulleys and they stopped selling them about a year ago. Failure rate (that is, unsatisfacotry performance) was around 50%.

I initially had one on my SS, installed by SLP while being built. I didn't have false KR like some guys, but the pulley caused slipping of my belt from 4500-5500 rpm, and a power loss of 40 rwhp in that range. Completely unsatisfacory.

They refunded my money and I subsequently had an ASP put on. I would strongly recommend sending the slp unit (even if it is a year old) and purchasing an ASP.

SLP products are good. Just not the pulley. And they know that now.

Thanks for the replies. Stupid question: What's a false KR? Code reading? Also, ChriSS, you said you like the ASP pulley. Did you dyno the car with and without it? What difference did it make in rwhp and/or run times? Any problems cranking tunes at an idle? That was a constant problem with my '89 Saleen (finally got smart and went GM in '94).

The LS1 has a sensitive sensor called a "knock" sensor, designed to detect detonation (ie form poor gas) and other vibrations harmful to your engine (over the long run) - in response, when knock is detected, the sensor and PCM will 'retard' timing to try to minimize damage to your engine (which kills horsepower too - KR is Knock Retard). Sometimes it gets fooled though by simple vibrations (like headers banging against the floorboards, etc...) and reacts as if there is a serious detonation problem (killing hp) - when it gets fooled like that, it is called false knock.

Unfortunately, I haven't done a dyno or track run since the swap, but the engine accelerates much better - no big stutter at 4500 rpm. Never a problem with charging or accessories with the crank pulley on the A4.
