Differences between 94 & 2000 check engine lights

OK, as you may know I am having a few problems. Well in my 94Z turning the ignition off turned the check engine light off and it would not come on when the car was restarted. Now I am getting a check engine light in the 2000 and it comes on immediatly when the car is started, long before any diagnostics could have been performed. My question is, how do I reset the check engine light? Will resetting it cause any problems, like loosing the original code? Does the car ever turn the check engine light off by itself (In my 94Z I could be cruzing down the interstate, the check engine light would come on for 5 minutes, then the light would go out, all without turning the key off. Also, should I buy a scan master or will a dealer's scanner be able to tell a lot more?

Autozone can scan and clear the code for free.

No, no need for an appointment. Make sure you write down the code so you can get an idea what might be wrong.

Question Got the code p0122 TPS sensor range low

Any idea what this means? The car ran fine when the check engine light was on. I did not hear the fans on when the check engine light was on like I used to in the LT1, are there two difern't check engine modes? Like a limp home (Fans on and minimal engine sensors required) and a hey take me to the dealership so they can rip you off mode?

The weird thing is that the check engin light was not on when I restarted the car today after it sat for ~24 hours. Why did the check engine light come on right away yesterday when there was no cool down time but overnight it cleared, is this normal?
