what are the differences between an f-body ls1 and a corvette ls1 of comprable years? (or were coorvettes in say 99 all ls6's? then what are those differences?)

The only differences if any may have been in the routing of the accessories. The Corvettes had different intakes and exhausts, but other than that, they are the same LS1's. The LS6's were only in the z06 corvettes.

All LS1s are basically the same thing, no matter what they come in and make around the same power, give or take 15 horsepower.

Some years come with different injectors, slightly different heads, slightly different cams, different intake manifold, different emissions stuff, etc, but they are all alike in 95% of everything else.

so then what makes an ls6 unlike an ls1?

Different block with better oil windage, more aggresive cam, better flowing heads, better flowing intake manifold, larger TB (85mm I think). Probably more that I can't think of.
