Difference between shocks and struts
Difference between shocks and struts
I have a 00' Z28 and I think it has struts in the front and shocks in the rear, whats the difference between the two, and can you replace the two struts with shocks. Which are better shocks or struts?
Re: Difference between shocks and struts
I would disagree. The 4th gen has struts up front and shocks in the rear. Basically a strut is a coil over design. A coil spring mounted around a shock. No, you can't usually replace a strut with a shock, since then you would need to find somewhere to mount the spring. This is a very common setup with struts in the front, due to space and pivoting for the steering. Alot of people actually try and convert to the coil over design on the rear.
Struts are a little harder to work with and change, since the spring is held at tension on the shock and you have to compress it to remove.

Re: Difference between shocks and struts
Well technically struts replace part of the spindle and turn as part of the steering assembly. 4th gens have a coil over shock but it's still a shock, not a strut.
