Difference between carriers?
Difference between carriers?
as it says in my sig i have 2.73 gears therefore a series 2 carrier...i know when you have the factory 3.23s or 3.42's you have the series 3 carrier is there any difference between the two durability wise and why exactly wont they hold the same gears?
im going with some 3.42's in the near future and just wanted to know.
thanks
Bill

the ring gear mounting flange is in a different position relative to the pinion gear center. the 3 series gears nave a smaller pinion, and therefore have to have to have the gear moved closer to the pinion center or make the gear thicker (which is what ford does in the 9 inch) the 2 series gears have a larger pinion and therefore must be farther from the pinion center. this is why you can get 3 series gears for the 2 series carrier (AKA "thick" gears) but you cant get 2 series gears for a 3 series carrier....
there is no difference in carrier durability, given the same brand and model carrier only for different series gears
