Cutouts: Do They Really Help?
Cutouts: Do They Really Help?
I'm thinking about getting an electric cutout. My question is, won't this decrease back-pressure for the motor and make me lose a little bottom-end? I want it to lower my times and raise my MPH a little. From a performance standpoint, will this help me at all? I also want one because my car's too quiet and they sound pretty damn cool.
Re: Cutouts: Do They Really Help?
usually people lose about .1-.3 tenth in their 1/4 mile with a cutout. And it doesnt take away much from downlow, and you gain more than you lose up top. And it also makes the engine sound badass.

I gained at least a 0.1 and the engine seems to rev faster and more freely now. Also, it sounds badass with stock manifolds and cats. Plus its cheaper than a cat back exhaust. And you can always close it if you need some quiet time while driving!

Re: Cutouts: Do They Really Help?
realize the gains from a cutout are HUGELY dependant on the type of catback or muffler you are running.
i bought a magnaflow catback off a buddy, he had a cutout installed and had it dynoed open and closed. he only gained 4hp with the cutout open over the magnaflow muffler.
this is due to the MF being quite free flowing to begin with.
just a thought. on a stock car it is WELL worth it

Yeah, I've been pretty busy the whole summer and I haven't been posting too much on any of the boards I frequent. I've been reading the boards almost on a daily basis, though.
I'm still slightly disappointed about the results.
Even though I shouldn't be.
I was hoping to go over 310rwhp. Maybe when the weather cools down a bit.
Re: Cutouts: Do They Really Help?
Cutouts are definitely worth it IMO. At the track yesterday, my Dad opened up the exhaust on his '73, and the MPH went up from 105 at best, to just under 110!!
(109.72) I'm not sure how much it affected the 1/4 time though, 'cause while I ran it into the 12's (12.795) from a best of 13.2, I think that we weren't driving the car right in the first place. BUT, the MPH definitely went up
.
Unless you've got the most free-flowing cat-back & muffler in the world, then a cutout will increase HP in almost all cases
