cutout?
cutout?
i am interested in buying a cutout and i have a few questions, how long is it, and would it add enough horsepower to feel a difference. my friend is tellin me tht they are like 10in long and he works at his dad performence shop and i would have them install it, also where would i have them install it. i think it should be rite b4 the cat. thx in advance
Re: cutout?
I'd say 10'' is about right. Not before the cat. You will throw a code, you need to either delete the rear O2's or put it after the cat. 4th gens have the perfect pocket to put a cutout. Right before the pipe enters the muffler. You cant miss it. (just about under the back seat) on the passenger side.
They are all about the same. Just make sure its 3''. I opted to go electric so I could have sort of a "volume ****" effect. Works quite well. Mine is a QuickTime performance QTEC.
hope this helps!
btw...you will feel a pretty decent difference. Some people put down about 10-13 horses with the cutout open as vs. closed on a stock catback exhaust. I know I can feel a difference, alot of it might be "psycho-physical" because of the sound increase. Sounds wicked at WOT. Makes it sound faster, so it makes it feel faster. But I do feel confident I picked up some ponies. Its a worthwile mod IMHO.

Re: cutout?
realize that on the LS1, one of the cats bolts directly to the exhaust manifold...pretty hard to fit a cutout in there.
like said above...one cutout, right under the rear seat will do you fine.
and the gains will depend on the type of exhaust you are currently running. putting a cutout on something like a Loudmouth or Rumbler will yield almost no gains. but put it on a stock exhast and you may see 15hp.
i know my old magnaflow exhaust only had a 4hp difference on the dyno with the cutout open

Re: cutout?
so r u guys sayin get an o/r y pipe and put a cut out on there? cuz tht seems like it would make the biggest difference. cuz i always kinda thought that if u put it in front of the cat then who needs an o/r y. ya kno
Re: cutout?
Put it under the pass rear seat, make sure when it's installed there is room for the electric cutout later, it'll just bolt onto the manual dump/cutout. Plenty gains. Post where tyou live, someone will show you their setup.
Re: cutout?
my gas mileage increased a consistent 1mpg with the cutout open
as for runninng dual cutouts, there really isn't a need for it on a bolt on car. a good catback (3" tubing) and a single cutout under the rear seat will flow well enough to support quite a bit of power.
not to mention cutouts under the front seats will be too anoying to run on a daily basis....it will truely be track only
