Cut out

I have a bone stock 2k z28. I was wondering if it would be all good on sound and what not if i add a cut out before the rear axle. I had one when I had the LT1. It sounded pretty well.

Re: Cut out

sure... If your into open manifolds thru cats sound... I don't like the sound of manifolds as apposed to headers... they sound so much more refined... lol just my .02

Re: Cut out

Well I know the LT1 had a nice sound with the cut out open. Hope that the LS1 sounds nice too. Although it always popped if you revved it up and such. I contributed it to just running rich. Is at the axle the best place to put it?

Re: Cut out

cut outs are cut outs are cut outs. unless going electric then there are different valves, butterfly, vane, disc ect.... and with this type of cut out seems fine the thing is when installing into your exhaust. Make sure you use like metals if welding into place, or make sure the size is the same as well if using clamps. I'm sure it will sound.... like you like... lol Just remember modifying cat controlled exhaust may be illegal for on hi-way use. Also local db laws for exhaust.
I have met shops that will not touch cars with any mods to remove or modify cat controlled vehicles.

Re: Cut out

I have no idea what metal the exhaust is under it now. I assume its all completely stock. None of the rest of the car has been molested. I got the car on black friday with only 58k miles on it. So I assume the steel cut out will be fine?

Re: Cut out

What would it be like if I just cut the whole rear tailpipe section off and put a cherrybomb inline with the single pipe?

lol sound like a cherry bomb exhaust... are you looking to be louder for cheap? the loudest you could make your car for "off road use" say the track would be in front of the cats. You could go muffler less and run straight pipes from your catted y back. The thing is the cut out would be your best bet for not getting pulled over and for being more daily drivable.

Re: Cut out

I believe this to be a video of just a glasspack with stock manifolds. You can hear the untuned vlv sound of the manifolds more. Headers would make this sound much more harmonic... IMHO

Re: Cut out

Louder than what it is now for sure. Granted I cant afford to redo the entire exhaust. I dont like it being so quiet. Doesnt sound like a muscle car at all that way. Guess Ill just go with the cutout. lol

Re: Cut out

The cutout won't make it sound like an old school musclecar, if that's what you're going for. It will sound like an old farm truck that had the exhaust rust and fall off

Re: Cut out

I don't like loud exhaust without headers. Sounds like open manifolds...
If you removed and replaced your muffler with a straight pipe, it would be louder for cheap... or you can put a muffler that has a cutout on it, so you could not annoy your neighbors 24/7

like this warlock muffler from summit.

Re: Cut out

How do I know which cutout will fit? Ive looked at several that say 3" but then it says fits most 2.5" pipes and such? I dont want to get the wrong one and it not fit over the stock exhaust that is 2.75. The ones I been looking at are 32-42 bucks.

Re: Cut out

make sure to measure the OD of your pipe, then get a cut out that has the same ID, pretty simple. Then you can slip it on over your pipes. Otherwise you will need to either flare your pipes to slide on or have both the same size to weld directly on.
