Clear MTI Air Lid for LS1 - any good?

I'm thinking about buying this clear air lid from MTI on Ebay:

Pic of one on a Red Formula:

I know MTI is a big name, but are these any good? I like it cause it's clear and would look good under the hood. But $109 + $12 shipping is a lot for me. Also, I'd like to get a lid that actually gave a few HP. Are there better clear lids? Cheaper? Thanks for any info ................Sam

a lid is a lid is a lid....when it comes to HP, no one brand has been proven to consistently outperform another.

so it boils down to whether you wanna pay that for the look.

I keep hearing that saying..."a lid is a lid is a lid". Very catchy. But does it mean that the stock lid does just as well? In which case I probably won't buy an aftermarket lid. Or, does it mean that all after-market lids are much better than the stock lid, but that there is just no difference amoung the after-market lids.

stock lid meaning the one that came on the z28s and trans ams? cause some of the higher end SSs and WS6s came with a factory installed lid i think, which i have no idea about it's performance.

but yeah...that statement refers to aftermarket lids.

first off they have more area directly above the filter, and they also don't have the plastic fins on the inside of the top of the lid. the higher volume in the lid itself increase the flow into the outlet of the lid.

also the outlet on the stock lid is oval and pretty restrictive compared to the 3-3.5" round outlet of most aftermarket lids. considering the stock maf is 3" it's nice to have the outlet of the lid the same size. much less restrictive.

also lids do away with those ugly air silencer bellows on each side of the intake. they are ugly and serve no real purpose.

Aftermarket are better than stock. You (have to?) remove the big air baffle things (which are supposedly only there to quiet the engine). The aftermarkets have a bigger opening to the throttle body. The stock one is pretty restricted.

I had someone looking for a clear lid as his previous one had "yellowed" according to him. I told him about MTI, which is where I bought mine, which looks like carbon fiber.

I'm very happy with it.

OK, I just bought one. There is nothing like spending a great big wad on yourself at Christmass! Weeeeeeee! And I was so worried about how much I was spending on gifts.

I did notice that my current lid has some kind of baffle thing on the back of it with an electrical connector. Ummmm, which sensor is this and is it hard to transfer to a new lid? Will i have to do some mods?

Your new lid should come with directions - you'll need to transfer the IAT sensor and grommet to the new lid - comes out easier with a little liquid dishwashing soap. Shouldn't have to mod anything.

Righto, Teke. My 'O2 SS came with the SLP lid installed.

I've got the MTI, and love the look and style. It's a very nice lid. The only thing that went wrong with mine was the fact that it cracked along the base in the back. I believe it's more from me forcing it into place than it being a flaw in the quality.
