Clanking noise?

Ok so i started my car up last night and it started making this noticably loud clanking noise coming from around where the pulleys are. My belt tensioner has always made a little clanking noise but it was still doing that and on top was the clanking noise. I revved it up a little by pulling the cable and it stopped.... any ideas on what the hell this is. The SES light isnt on either. Please help

Re: Clanking noise?

Sounds like piston slap, pretty normal if it goes away after engine reaches operating temp. If you want more info just type in piston slap in the forum search and you'll find tons of threads about it.

Re: Clanking noise?

^ Clanking... Piston slap??? ... I'd attribute piston slap as a clicking/ticking... not LOUD either...

Ehh...maybe... Also might have been dry lifters... Once the oil pressure bumps up, it stops.. How offen does this happen?

Re: Clanking noise?

Make a mental note next time.. If you've driven the car latley, has it been warmed up in the past...5/6 hrs or so... Just to get an idea...

Sometimes tesioners make noise. Not clanking, tho..

I have piston slap at startup, and it clanks for about 15 seconds then goes away its not a tick, it almost sounds like a knock.

Re: Clanking noise?

same with mine. the slap knocks. the sound resembles some piece of metal hitting a very hard wood, best way to describe it-- kind of a hollow noise

Re: Clanking noise?

well it started doing it again this morning and it would stop. it is a very aggressive sound and very fast paced. I got to a red light and it just shut off. battery levels were down in the red. SES light came on out of no where. just shut off on me. I got it over to a shop and he said may be the fuel pump out. But it wasnt making a noise when he got it over to the shop. weird?
