Chirpin cricket under my hood.
That's what it sounds like. And it's worse at idle. I'm thinking it could be a belt. Especialy if it's the original of the car. 98 Z with 113k miles on it. Anything else it could be? Doesn't seem to get any worse when the AC is on.
might be knock retard.

I've got a similar problem on my 98Z. When the engine is cold, it'll sound like a swarm of crickets in my engine for maybe 5 minutes, then the noise goes away. Although I haven't messed with it, I'm also assuming it's a pulley or belt.
Just need to pickup a can of astroglide before taking it to the dealer.

There is a service bulletin on this, I just saw it on LS1.com.
The belt, pulley, and bracket can be replaced to fix the problem.
It is caused by misalignment.

It sounds like it's probably the bearing in the idler pulley (tensioner). They do eventually wear out, and with over 100k, it's not unlikely. I don't think they're that expensive either. That's my best guess anyway. If that's not the problem though, maybe you just need some Raid!

Exactly, Blackhawk T/A - that was probably me who posted the TSB. I just got done having it fixed. It's more than just the belt - they end up changing out the alternator bracket, and installing a double-wide idler pulley - exactly right - an alignment problem. Here's the TSB:
Accessory Drive Belt - Squeak/Chirp Noise
BULLETIN NUMBER: 00-06-01-008
SECTION: 06 - Engine/Propulsion System
DATE: March 2000
SUBJECT: Accessory Drive Belt Squeak/Chirp Noise (Install New Double Row Idler Pulley, Generator Bracket and Serpentine Belt)
MODELS:
1998-2000 Chevrolet Camaro
1998-2000 Pontiac Firebird
Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint Y2107225 with 5.7L V8 Engine (VIN G - RPO LS1)
CONDITION: Some customers may comment on a squeak/chirp noise coming from the accessory drive serpentine belt. The noise will be most noticeable at idle and low engine speeds.
CAUSE: The serpentine belt squeak/chirp noise may be caused by misalignment between the idler pulley and crankshaft pulley. A slight rocking motion of the idler pulley causes the misalignment, which results in noise.
CORRECTION: To correct this condition on vehicles built prior to the above VIN breakpoint, install the new generator bracket, double row idler pulley and serpentine belt following Service Manual procedures.
Important: The new generator bracket can be identified by the depth of the idler pulley mounting pilot. The pilot dimension (2) on the new generator bracket is 10 mm. Dimension (2) on the previous bracket was 8.3 mm.

I have that same problem, I have already changed the tensioner pulley and the serpentine belt and it didnt help a thing. The squeeking sound that comes from mine is in the area of the left catalytic converter. It kind of shakes and shimmies and makes that chirping sound. I dont know how to fix it though.

I ahve the same deal going on and I had it fixed once a while back. Of coarse the mechanics fix was to put belt dressing on it and tighten the belt.
Thanks for the TSB

My name's John. It's a different idler pulley (double row idler pulley) and the alternator bracket changes the alignment of the alternator in relation to the other pulleys. If the mechanic didn't know about the TSB, he probably replaced the old idler pulley with the same (part number) new one.
