check engine light

Hey,
My check engine light came on yesterday. Not flashing, so its something in the emissions. Gas cap is good, nothing is wet, good fuel. Any ideas? O2 sensor? Glitch? What would cause it to just come on?
thanks

A.I.R./EGR? A crinkled gasked in the emissions system can sometimes throw a useless code. Best to just scan it and find out.

Re: check engine light

Just scaned ECU. i was throwing 2 codes: engine running to cold (due to 160 thermo), and catalitic converter not functioning properly (because engine is too cold)

my engine runs between 160 and 200 depending on outside temps, cause i havent reset the fans yet. I've had the thermostat in now for about 6 months, any reason why it woulds throw a code now?

thanks

Re: check engine light

You can look up the DTC descriptions/solutions at www.gearchatter.com/

I run my fans at 184/175 and 194/185 year round with a 160 and have never thrown any codes. Can you post the codes? Just curious what they were.

Re: check engine light

If you cleared them with the Predator they're gone. Hopefully they won't come back.

Re: check engine light

it's probably your catalytic converter. i just went to the dealership and they scanned mine and one of my catalytic converters is not flowing as good as the other. The funny thing is a GM catalytic converter cost $800 but i aint got to pay that since im still under the emissions warranty and even if I wasnt i would just go buy magnaflow or slp high flow ones for like $700 less.

Re: check engine light

my cats are fine. in order for the cats to work properly, you need temperatures of over 200 F. and because my engine is running at 160 F, the cats are not functioning properly. all that means is that im making more HP and more pollution.

Re: check engine light

Your water temperature has little to no effect on your EGT (exhaust gas temperature) If you were to hook up a EGT monitor to your hottest cylinder it should read around 900 deg. Now your A/F ratio can affect this. The leaner you run the hotter it gets or vice versa. If your throwing codes it has nothing to do with your water temp.

Re: check engine light

Just an FYI, you can get almost all PCM DTC codes fully explained here (they are broken down by Year and Platform):

http://www.gearchatter.com

Just look for the DTC category.
