Lightbulb Cat recommendations

One of my factory cats needs replacing so I am at a decision point.

Considering that I am registered in Texas, I am looking at replacing both with a high-flow cats, gutting the cats, or replacing them with straight pipe.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations regarding this specific emissions situation? My current registration is in Smog Town...I mean Houston. Thanks.

With your current mods, any replacement cat will do.

If it was me, I'd cut them out.

Are you beyond the 10year/120K cat warranty? Just thought I'd mention it.

No, I didn't even realize such coverage existed. Assuming I could get it replaced at a dealership for free, I imagine that would be my best option.

Is this information in the manual?

No it's an afterthought deal from GM. Just go to your dealer and ask them to warantee it.

Can anyone confirm this warranty information is correct?

I just called my local Chevy dealership, gave them the VIN#, and after putting it in the computer, they said it was an 8year/80k warranty.

Here is the answer from the EPA.

How Long Do the Emissions Warranties Apply to Individual Parts of My Vehicle?

For 1995 and newer model year vehicles, emission control and emission related parts are warranted for the first 2 years or 24,000 miles of vehicle use. Specified major emission-control components are warranted for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use.

Call another dealer, or the GM customer service number. They extended the warranty only on the 00-02 F cars with the LS1. I got a letter in the mail from GM back in December 06. "Campaign - Catalytic Converter Warranty Extension. Subject: Special Coverage Adjustment - Catalytic Converter Extended Warranty #05513" - 8/80 was the original federal emissions warranty.

Thanks - very helpful.

Update: code P0420 was indeed the catalytic converters going bad. Thanks to Special Coverage Bulletin #05513 I got both cats replaced free of charge under warranty. Thanks to everyone for your help
