Can A/C cause SES light?

The A/C compresser just locked up in my Z. Could that cause the SES light to come on? It seems like the compresser is still trying to operate even when the control is turned to "OFF". I can hear a slight, High pitched whine when the car is idling. Anyone every replaced the A/C compresser? Where should I get one? The dealer wants like $750 just for the pump.

Thanks!!

Re: Can A/C cause SES light?

Yes the A/c can cause an SES light to come on, but you need to read the code to find out for sure what code is present.

A/c compressors are not going to be cheap brand new. You could possibly check into remanufactured compressor's with clutches or even check with a salvage/junk yard to find a low mileage comp.w/a clutch.

Remember 99% of the time when a compressor locks up it send metal shavings and derbis through the rest of the system so you may consider replacing the metering device(orifice tube or expansion valve), accumulator or drier, and flushing the condesor and possibly the evaporator.

It's not a cheap fix but it is highly recomended that a certified a/c technician perform these services. Good luck!

Re: Can A/C cause SES light?

NAPA has brand new ones for around $400.00, remanufactured ones for about $270. and take the advice in the post above and replace the accumulator, the orifice tube and completely flush the system because if you don't, your new compressor will have a very short life span! Also , most auto part stores will only warranty a compressor if you change these additional parts anyway and most require the installation to be done by a ASE certified mechanic.Hope this helps
