camshaft ques...
I just bought a 1999 camaro z28, and at the moment it is completely stock. I have an idea of what I want to do first but eventually i want to get heads and cam. My question is does it matter if my car is completely stock before I get my heads and cam or if it does what should i do to it first. Also what cams do you guys have? im wondering what cams have had the best performance gains for you. I heard that 221 to 227 duration is a good way to go along with 114lsa. if you guys could tell me about your expierences that would be great. thanx
Re: camshaft ques...
First of all, you don't want to go with heads and cam until you do the first few essential boltons. Mainly you need headers, a catback, a cold air intake. If the car isn't breathing, it wont respond to the cam at all. As far as the cam, it really depends on what you are looking for out of it. I always recommend Futral Motorsports' cams. Just call them up and they will talk to you for however long you want to and get you something perfect for it. In addition, FMS uses Cam Motion lobes, which allow you to run a longer duration while being very streetable. My F11 (228/230) drives just like it is stock, and I am actually going bigger in a week. It also made 410 rwhp cam only. Like I said, you just need to decide what you want to do with the car, call up Allan Futral, and talk to him.
Re: camshaft ques...
to take advantage of the cam you definatly want to do the basic intake and exhaust upgrades.
i would do lid, LS6 intake (in your case), headers and a catback
then do a moderate 224ish cam.
i've read alot of guys getting 380hp average on stock heads with that size cam, probably 400-410 with heads. not bad for simple streetable h/c swap.
