Cams.. Need Help

I am going to be looking into a Cam in the near future. I have been hearing they make a Big Diffrence and it seems they aren't that Expensive.

I have a Basic understanding of what they do, but when I look at the Numbers involved with them, it's like Greek. Could someone please help me out and explain both the numbers and what would be the Best Cam to buy, Racing Cam, and what kind of Gains to expect. Sound would be nice, but performance is most imporant to me.

the cam changes the rotational motion of the engine into linear movement(more or less). the lobes of the cam open and close the intake and exhaust valves. the duration is how long the valve is open at (usually).050 and the lift is how much the valve is open. this is a very simplistic explaination.check this out it is a very good basic article to start with
