camaro build at V.R.E.

Hey ya'll, name's Angel. I lurk around this board alot but really haven't posted a whole much.

About a year ago, well more than a year ago... I decided to take my car up to michigan from florida for a spring change and tune at V.R.E. I have known Nick for a few years now, he buit my original 408ci which had been great excpet for the Ferrea springs i had originally. After that was done, we started chatting about the car and well.... this happened:

Before:

After:

With some planning, the car went from just a tune and minor springs swap into a single turbo 410ci streetcar!! It started back in May 06' and now in June, the car is almost finished. I would like to chronicle the build from the tear down to the present.

Well, lets begin.

So, at this point, with the car's interior ripped out, there is only one thing left to do, fill it up:

Well that was a big step from a tuneup and spring swap. Very nice though. Have you had any dyno runs yet?

The seats are Corbeau FX1. They are a fixed seat with a ls1/universal slider system. The 10pt is chromoly built by the guys at stenod. I didn't really want to kill the interior with bars but function before form, as NHRA rules require a 10pt. for the ET's we are planning of running. More on that later....

So, after the cage was built, we needed to tear the motor and drivetrain parts out. Here are some pics of that:

you can see the old silver in the engine bay still..... paint/body work will come later.

408ci baby!! Looks like you regular stock ls1 huh?

Ok, after that was done, we needed to address what will go in and what needs to be ordered.

So, the original C.R. for the 408ci was 11.3:1 approx. We needed that to go down to something boost friendly. So, with Diamond being literally around the corner, we had some custom FI pistons designed and fabbed for the build.

Too nice to cover up huh?!

Looks nice.

Any specs or things you wanted to discuss or did you just want to showcase your car?

Right well, a bit of both. Its ls1 related but there is some FI, paint/body, the build, etc.

I wasn't sure which section to place this is in so if you want to move to the correct section, feel free... you ARE mod after all!

Nah, I'm not going to move it.

I'm interested in seeing it as well and it looks like one serious beast of a buildup.

Shooting for 1000rwhp?

ok, now that junk is out of the way, lets get to it huh?

So we wanted to go turbo, thats for sure. I wanted a few things to stay intacted like my A/C. Living in Miami, Fl. without A/C is like trying to lock down on a set of ski's with a pair of sandals!! Not gonna work!!

So, we lucked out and found a shop in Ohio that just began build turbo kits for Ls1 camaro's. They are a non-vendor here so it wont be mentioned. The turbo of choice is S85 t6 turbo. Since the new motor will measure 410ci, with the bore needed to fill the new pistons, a regular t4 turbo, even a t88, will be choked to much to produce any kind of useable power. So a t6 turbine housing had to be used inorder to get the job done right.

Here is the turbo and kit. They have been recently powdercoated or jethoat'd, except for the coldside.

well, on a decent tune and possibly a mix, not pump, yes. I think we can shoot for 1000rwhp but with the stalled 4l80e, it would take some a bit more than a m6.

I would be very happy with a decent 700rwhp plus on pump gas. I normally use 93 octane so with that, i think we can achieve it. The new cam spec has been lowered from the 246/248 i had before. The new c.r. is somewhere around 8.7:1. Also, my biggest drawback or obstacle was the 98pcm i have. The 98pcm is not really for big power on boost. Also, it cannot be setup to control a 4l80e electronically. Soooo.... more money more money said eric! A Big stuff 3 was ordered!!

I cannot wait to get the car finished!!! I really want it to be streetable, first, track monster second. If i can live at 12psi and be nasty on the streets, than so be it.

However, the best part about all of this is that i have learned alot about FI and tuning. I hope to be more around this board as the 'other' board can get a bit busy for me. I can help with all that i know so others can do it without the mistakes i have made along the way!

Angel

Well, so far, that is it for the mechanics of the car. Things not mentioned is that the car will go with a new 4l80e i picked up for a good price. The rear end will be a Moser 12 bolt with stock auto 3.23 gears. The trans requires some misc. parts to make it work, so those things are like a new dipstick, Spohn TopGun Driveshaft, some fittings, a wiring harness, a new Flexplate, etc.

Besides that, the car is getting some paint and body work done, as well as a new carpet to be stitched custom around the new 10pt cage. The new turbo kit included a large intercooler, a new, larger radiator, and top crossover pipe to route to coolant from the radiator to the engine.

Anyone got any questions so far or comments? I really dont want to show-off but to show what me and the playa's at VRE have been up to!!

Anyways, got some more of the paint and body work with some final pics..

ok, some paint and body work. The shop doing the work is called extreme customs. Its close to VRE. Eric recommended then and they have done a fantastic job. Alight background, the car had a huge dent on the right rear quarter panel. Also, the old paint job was peeling the clear and the front bumper had been hit by some guy who backed up into it without looking!

So, i guess here we go!!
