buying an ls6 block, few questions
I recently warped the block and heads on my 99 z28 ls1. I decided, while I'm replacing it, why not upgrade and get a flippin z06 engine?
Anyway, in light of this decision there are a few unanswered questions I'm relying on you folks to answer for me .
Firstly, it'd be the best if I could find a restored 6.0 ls6, but so far it's become hard. Where would it be easiest (and cheapest) to look for one with the lowest miles possible? On that note, how much more expensive would a 6.0 be over a 5.7? I've found that auctions aren't always good for finding these numbers out.
Besides the obvious new pistons that would be needed, what parts could I bring from my ls1 and put into the ls6, and with a 6.0 don't I need a custom head gasket? On that note, do 5.7 heads work on 6.0s too? Would the horsepower difference be substantial if I didn't go with all the internal parts that are specifically made for the ls6?
And finally, what's an average price for a REPUTABLE (that word needs to be bolded, I've had my fair share of dealings with ****ty mechanics), engine swap, and don't they charge less if you give them your old engine?
I know, I'm like a curious five year old that never shuts up.

Re: buying an ls6 block, few questions
I just did an LS6 longblock install. Pics can be found at the link in my sig.
I paid $5229 for the longblock. Installation SHOULD have been $1200, but I only paid $600 and worked with the shop and did 1/2 the work myself.

lol one is 6.0 litres and is cast iron, the other is 5.7 litres and is not cast iron. Don't forget to add the cost of heads, rotating assembly(pistons, crank, etc), intake manifold, exhaust, wiring harness, pulley system, removal of your ls-1, assembly & installation of new engine.

If I were to buy an LS6 longblock, what other components would I need?
As far as I know (and I may be wrong here), I'd need new plugs and wiring harness? (I need new ones anyway) Would I need a new computer?
I'm not keen on hidden costs.

The LS6 longblock comes with new plugs and a new water pump. The LS6 longblock is a direct swap for your LS1 longblock and all of the sensors, etc., that are in your LS1 will just bolt right into the same spots on the LS6. The LS6 longblock comes with the F-Body oil pan and windage tray in the crate, so you just have to remove the new C5 pan and tray and sell it along with the pulley. You will need to swap over your F-Body pulley. Even your LS1 intake will swap over to the LS6 block, but I went ahead and bought an SLP LS6 intake with EGR provisions and I also bought a new LS6 clutch since I was going to have everything out anyway. Your stock wiring harness even works with the LS6 longblock and your stock programming will work as well, allthough you won't be getting the LS6's full potential with the stock PCM, but it will work just fine. I'm still running on my stock PCM program until I have time to send of my PCM to have it reprogrammed.
The LS6 longblock comes with the revised PCV system that runs under the intake, so you will have to re-route the driver side PCV valve, but that cost me a whopping $2 in parts.
I paid $5229 shipped for my LS6 longblock and then I sold the new C5 oil pan and pulley that came with it for $350. That brought my cost down to $4879 for the new motor. There is NO core charge either, so whatever you get for your LS1 that you pull out, you can deduct from your final cost as well.
