Buying 99 z. need advice and tech info
Hey guys, i am gonna prolly buy this one 99 z i found,dk blue with tan cloth .. it's 6 speed, ttops, pwr everything, keyless entry and 66k mi, the tranny feels right and the motor has a bit of a tapping to it, but my lt1 did to... could that be the injectors? the clutch feels like rigid... tryin to think of the right words " it vibrates a little??", the guy said he didnt drive her too much, so could that be just from the car not being driven? he's asking 12,500 and thats not bad for 99 with 66k around here.... Also, the car doesnt have the fuel rail covers? are all stock ls1's without them? i thought they came with them but i guesss not? oh, car has new tires and stuff so tell me what u think..... thanks
Mine is an A4, so I can't help with the clutch question. All the F cars didn't have the fuel rail covers, that's a 'Vette thing as far as I know. I think they look stupid any way. 66k On a 99 is sort of higher than average so I think it's been driven. Some LS1s do have a slight ticking problem. If it gets better when it warms up that would be normal, but if it gets louder then that's bad.
Hope you make the choice that best fits you, either way. Good luck.

66K and it hasn't been driven...? Hmmm...
Sure, could be that he is just a middle man and not the original owner...
Kinda funny statement nevertheless...
Sounds like it might need some work on the clutch. Make sure you take that into account if you are going to make an offer.
The tapping you hear could be just the usual LS1 piston slap. It should go away when it is warm. If it is still there, it could be numerous things: sticky lifter/s, injectors, header/manifold gasket etc. Shouldn't be too bad, if you ask me.
Just pay attention to the overall condition and whether there are any other unusual leaks or noises. They will tell you how well the car has been kept.
Since it sounds like it is not the original owner selling it, you might want to have a mechanic take a look at it, too. Money well spent if you are not that much mechanically inclined.
To me that car would be worth somewhere around $10-$11K, tops. You seem to be in the ballpark already, so just bargain a little and see what you can come up with.
Good luck!
