Blow off Valves

What exactly are blow off valves and how/are they beneficial? I've heard about em before, just don't know jack **** you know? :\

Before everyone here jumps on you, and attempts to make you feel stupid, blow-off valves are for turbo motors. You'll never have to worry about one.

Well never is a really broad term . I have one. Of course I have a turbo as well, but thats not the point is it .

From my understanding, the blow off valve is to relief the excess pressure generated from the turbo changer in your engine. The blow off valve is a critical part in a turbo charged engine. Without this safety relief, damage can result to your engine.

Excess manifold pressure when you come off of the throttle. Relieving excess pressure during acceleration so you don't overwhelm the engine is primarily the job of the wastegate.
