Big dent in friends muffler

A friend of mine was driving down the road in his 98 z28 and a big rock flew up somehow and put a big dent in his muffler. He was wondering if he needs to get a new muffler, or can he just hammer the dent out? I thought that the muffler internals might be damaged. The dent goes halfway into his muffler by the way.

i say go to local exhaust shop cut the mufler out and put him in a straight pipe and dont even mess with new muffler. I had that done to my car today did it for 75 bucks versus 180 for a new muffler to be put in. Sounds bad *** too now!

I agree that it sounds bad *** as well.. But the problem I see with not having a muffler is the fact that it will pretty loud as well.. A friend of mine who moved out of town keeps getting harassed for his 88 Muskrat SHO 5.0, all he has is straight pipes from the cats and Damn it is too loud, $ 65 fix it tickets add up...

I wonder what it would sound like if you gutted the stock muffler. You could cut off one of the pipes, get inside there with a hammer and a big flat head screw driver and bust everything out. It would be like one giant resonator. Dunno how loud that would make it though.

I don't think it would sound good at all if you could but honestly I have seen them and it isn't like a cat at all. I doubt you could do anything but ruin the muffler if you tried to bend the insides with a screwdriver. It is pretty tough metal, they are made to last a pretty good bit.

His car sounds just fine, but he doesn't know if he should just leave it the way it is, or try hammering it back into shape. I told him to just get a GMMG exhaust like I'm going to do. I'm still considering paying $700 for that exhaust. I just can't get past the sound of the black trans am with red stripes on their site. Beyond awesome.
