best way to check rev limit...without program software?

i've got scan software that reads real-time data, and i want to find out what my rev limiter is set at.

i know stock is 6200 (correct?), but i want to confirm this. i have to have my shift light way down at 57 or 5800 (according to the crappy stock tach) to keep from hitting the rev limiter...
now i realize these tachs are crap, that's why i want to use the software to check it.

should i find a staight stretch of road and just use 2nd gear and slowly run up to 6k?

or is it just as good to do it in nuetral sitting in a vacent lot (it's loud )?

i tried a quick run tonite, and my light went on, but the program only recorded 5200rpms...and i'm pretty sure i was close to the limiter...

i'm confused...trying to figure it out

well..i'm not sure how to tell what its set at...but one thing you could do is get a programmer and set it at w/e you think is safe..i would set it at 6200, which is stock...just so you know for piece of mind that it will cut out at 6200..Okay, now whatever you do, DO NOT sit there in park/neutral, and rev the motor that high..never rev a motor that high with out a load...bad bad things can happen. Okay..your idea about finding a straight road..could be a possibilty, BUT the only thing i would be scared about is, if the previous owner or w/e set the rev limiter to let say...7K RPM...you could over rev the motor without even knowing it. If you are gonna do this, i wouldnt do it slowly either..i would put it in 2nd..and stomp it..hit the rev limiter..than back off...this would probably be less painful for the motor than slowly creeping its way to the rev limiter...But i think the programmer is the safest, and most logical way to go about this.

How is reving an engine in park/neutral any worse than reving an engine under load. As long as you aren't exceeding the redline rpm's I tend think it would be worse to rev it higher when under a load than when not.

you have answered your own question in a way, the stock tach is usually slow to respond to WOT rpm's and when you are at 5700-5800 on the tach you are actually in the 6100-6200 range and bouncing off the rev limiter

well i tried it in 3rd gear...slowly...well maybe took 10 seconds to go the last 500rpms...and it went up to 6200 and the shift light went off around 6k if i remember...

so i guess i just have to fine tune the shift light so i can nail it just before the limiter.

figured 3rd was good cause that's only about 100mph and it wouldn't go up to redline as fast...

thanks guys...

i can't beleive the tach is almost 500rpms off!!
