Best type of shifting?

What is the best type of shifting to do when racing? I have heard all this talk about how the driver makes so much differances, so what is the differance between a great driver, and an ok driver? Thanks, Ryan

you have to powershift. You keep the gas pedal always down, and only use the clutch. On lower gears like 1st and sometimes 2nd, you need to let out of the gas a tiny bit, maybe half throttle. It sounds nasty and isn't great for your clutch but is necessary to stand a chance vs other manuals.

not true..

the difference is in time..

powershifting doesnt = the fastest out of the two..
It does = the most likely broken tranny tho..

I shift quickly with both gas off and clutch in.. I still run quickly as well. I have also witnessed people that just dont seem to move their arms as quickly either..

The best type of shifting is one that fits you best.. I would rather keep my tranny and run quick than to run a whole .15 faster with less tranny life.

You sorta contradicted yourself a little.......you started off by saying "not true, the difference is in time", but then made the statement that you'd rather run slower than kill your tranny.

When it comes to RACING, and determining who is FASTER, if you want to protect your car, that's fine, but a "good" drag racer is the guy who's not afraid of hurting his tranny and would rather see .15 seconds faster at the end of the track. Remember, they measure your time by 1/1000ths of a second, and .001 seconds faster is .001 faster.

When driving a standard, the ability to launch good is also a big factor. If you "dump" the clutch with the engine revving too high, you'll probably spin the tires all the way through 1st and probably into 2nd gear, but if you don't give it enough gas off the line, you'll bog the car down and not be as fast either. Being a "good driver" has a lot to do with the launch, and also a lot to do with how quickly you can shift.

true.. but I guess its all relative... I know I can get a 13.1 if I really really wanted to risk it.. and i know I can pull a 12.9 if I wanted to put on my MT slicks but I choose not to. I have had friends that on a 13.8 car would slam his gears hard.. every time.. within 3 weeks he was installing tranny parts. I guess to me its all about the worth.

Is there $ on line or are you just seeing how fast your car can go? If there is $ to be won and you need every split second, then why not.. but since many of us just run at the track for fun, why risk a ride home in the wrecker?

powershifting usually is the best...on street tires usually just doing a quick shift on the 1-2 is best to keep spin to a minimum but the othe gears you should be able to bang with little to no spin issues.

hey what is the best way to launch without damagin your clutch or transmission.......my 98 z28 m6 is actually the first stick car ive ever driven. Ive been driving it about two weeks now and am gettin pretty good. But im tired of the RPMs dropping like every time i let off the clutch from a dead stop and seeing ford taurus's like smoke me in acceleration. Apart from a good launch for like racing, could someone explain a good way to just reguraly accellerate smoothly similar to the feeling of an auto transmission? Thanks i appreciate it.

I've tried shifting on the gas, off the gas, and various points in between. I ran my best times by powershifting, keeping the gas on the floor the whole time.

However, after I added boxed LCA's, I was able to move my launch from 1700 RPM to 3000 RPM and still hook with my Kumhos. The LCA's dropped my 60' time from 2.2 to 1.9 on those tires.

Powershifting 1 - 2 with the LCA's really seemed to put the hurt on the car. So, I let off the gas a little on the 1 -2 shift and the car ran a lot beetter.

I've got 4.11 gears in the back and boxed LCA's ... launching and shifting takes some getting used to with that setup.
