Ash Tray Light

Hello all. This isn't quite a LS1 engine question, but I couldn't find a different, more applicable board.

Anyway, I was driving down the highway last night, and began to notice this burning plastic type of smell. Odd. So I pulled over and it was coming from the ash try. Very odd, since the ash tray is metal. I pulled out the tray and found the culprit. It was the ash tray light that was so damn hot that the plastic cover over it was starting to smell. It wasn't melted or anything, but it was hot enough to discolor the buld holder. What's even stranger, is that when I tried to take the bulb out, I couldn't! It's this one piece setup with the two wires firmly wedged into it. I tried following the wires, but didn't feel like taking apart my whole console at the Mobile station I pulled into. I ended up just smacking the buld while it was hot to burn out the filament.

My car's a 01 Z28. Has anyone seen this problem before? How do you get that buld out??? Please tell me GM thought up a better way than to tear apart the whole console! Any/all input is much appreciated!

BlackZin01,

I also have an '01 Z28 (black, too !), but I haven't noticed the ash tray light bulb getting so hot that it makes the plastic cover smell. Maybe a short somewhere in the line that feeds power to your ash tray bulb/assembly??? I know that sounds obvious, but I can't imagine what else it'd be. Check the fuse. Is it the right size? If it's too small, it may be working harder = generating more heat??? Weird...

All I've noticed with regard to the ash tray light is that I'd like it to NOT be on. Kinda annoying, but ya get past it, ya know?

Daryl
PS- I hope the Sox spank the Yanks! Sick of them. I'd love to see a Sox v. Cubs World Series... for old times' sake.

Thanks. (Nice car, btw ) I'll check it and see what's going on. I haven't changed any of the fuses since I bought the car. I'll try the dealer to see if they have anything to say about it. Thanks!

Oh, and the Sox just finished off the Yanks. Got a bit nerve racking in the top of the 9th, but they pulled it off!

Later.

My bulb is burned out and I know what you mean about trying to replace the bulb... its damn near impossible. I don't think GM planned on having you replace that bulb. I think the only way to replace it is to cut the wires and splice in a new one. But I wouldn't worry about the bulb, if it were me... I mean, why do you need a light to look at your ashes (if you smoke) or your garbage (in my case). I mean.... do you have a light in your trash can at home? By the way... GO BO SOX!!! Its damn good to see some Boston Fans!!
