Question Around what RPM do you stay at?

A question for M6 guys

When you're cruising around town, what RPM do you usually stay at?(25-45mph) What RPM do you stay at on the highway? (60mph)

Around town, I usually keep my RPM around 2500-2800. On the highway I keep it around 2000-2500. I never cruise over 2900 RPMs.

Cruising at 1100-1700 around town, cruise in sixth anytime over 50mph. But I also have 4.11's . Once I stick the hotcam in I'll probly not cruise at such a low rpm though.

wow you cruise high. i like to keep it around 1500-2000 and never too much lower.

his theorectical top speed will still be higher than he can actually go.

I usually drive just under 2000 rpm. Any higher and it hurts mileage and might cause over-heating after long periods on hot days. When I'm feeling a little bad I rev higher though, don't wake up the beast in me.

Driving around town I keep the rpm's relatively low, often under 2K. I might shift at 2200-2400, but when cruising I am in fifth or sixth.

I keep my RPM as low as possibly when cruising. By 40 I'm in 5th and a little over 50 I'll go into 6th and I have the stock 3.42's.

No need to run the rpm that high, these are torqueless ricer 4 bangers. If they were meant to cruise that high of an RPM the idle wouldn't be so low either. You got to be killing your fuel milage.

For all of you who run your motors at low rpm... under high load situations at low rpm (IE mat the pedal at 1100 rpm in 5th) you can begin to develop siginificant wear on the crank bearings by "peak directional motions" which are mitigated by higher gearing allowing the crank to "spin up" faster and centrifical force to takeover. Basically as you all know the crank is trying to be pushed out the bottom of the car by the piston/connecting rod, and the only thing holding it in is the fact it would rather spin than move vertically. Lugging the motor changes that, and the impulses become significantly more vertical leading to a lot of wear at the top/bottom of the U of the bearings.

HR mag had a good article about this about a year back.

As for me, I drop it into 6th (3.42 gears) somewhere between 65 and 70.

1100 is a bit on the low side, but why would you mat the pedal and not downshift? This is one reason I went !CAGS. It forced 4th gear too early while accelerating.

The reason I cruise at such high rpms is because I like to hear my exhaust roaring And to tell you the truth, I still get awesome gas mileage! I always shift at 2800rpm too. I may start keeping my rpms low though, just to be easier on the engine.

You don't necessarily have to floor it in a high gear to cause that lugging condition "chrizz" is describing. Even if you hit a small hill or incline while you're cruising in a high gear (at low RPM's), the engine will begin to lug, and you can often hear the droning that is caused by that vibration in the motor. While I don't have a 6-speed in my car, I've got 2.73's which are very high gears, and I experience that same type of lugging if I drive around in overdrive, so often I'll leave it in drive unless I'm doing at least 60 mph. And besides, it's always nice having crisp, immediate throttle response when you're cruising at higher RPM's.

i shift at 2.2-3.0 because if i shift lower the frame rattles.. well something does

i drive hard alot and eat all the rice and whip all the stangs around whenever i meet one on the road so when there isnt one around i try and cruise in 5th or 6th (whatever puts me around 2k RPMS and save a little gas.. i got 15.95 MPG last tank.. :blah:

Ok, your name clicked...IIRC you just go tthe GMMG....that explains it.

I'd probably be keeping the RPM level a bit higher too.

so even with 4.11s he would still be able to do 150mph?
