Exclamation Any reason I can't put '96 rear diff & gears in a '00? Need help quick, please!

Hi guys...

I busted my gears and was going to go back to stock 3.42s since I'll be getting a pretty big HP upgrade soon. I found a guy who will sell me a complete rear end that came off a '96 M6 w/ 40,000 miles for $100. The ratio should be 3.42 from the information I can find, but he's not sure about it other than the fact that it's stock.

Teo questions:

1. Can someone with a reliable source of information confirm that a '96 M6 has 3.42s stock?
2. Will this assembly swap right into my 2000 without significant modification?

My window of opportunity is small, so the faster I can find out, the better. Thanks a lot for any help you can give.

Well the rear will fit right in but the abs stuff is different. Yes all M6's after 93 had 3.42 gear rear ends.........

Sorry for my ignorance, but I really don't know much about the inner workings of the rear end assembly... does that mean that only the ring and pinion would interchange, or would the differential/carrier work in mine too?

Well, basically what I'm trying to figure out is this... can I bolt a '96 rear end on my car and have it work, or are they only interchangable at the ring & pinion level? If only the ring & pinion will interchange, I might as well spend the little extra and have new installed... but if I can swap the rear end, that would save me a lot of money and time.

Anybody? Thanks.

Well on the Moser's you need to use shims for the LT1 rears on the braking setup. I am not sure how the pre-98 rears are set up for the brakes. Jus a though - If you were to swap in an older rear you'd have to modify the rear to accept the LS1 braking assembly. I can't imagine this being incredibly hard because I hear a lot of LT1 guys doing the LS1 brake swaps.

I just put a complete rear from a '98 in my car. Neither car had traction control and it fit without any modifications.
