Post Aluminum Flywheel?

I managed to smoke my clutch recently, and the replacement I am lookin at comes with an aluminum flywheel for about $150 more.

Does anyone here have an aluminnum flywheel on their car? How does it affect street driveability?

An aluminum flywheel is supposed to allow the engine to rev a bit quicker, increasing throttle response, correct? At the expense of quick "drag race" style launches due to the loss of engine momentum and the rapid loss of rpms ("bogging") due to this?

Is this an accurate desciption of an aluminum flywheel on a car from anyones experiences?

Most of my buddies are more into drag racing and they keep pushing me away from it, but I'd gladly give up the wheel smoking (and diferential busting) burnouts for a snappier throttle and faster acceleration once rolling!

Thanks for any replies!

1. Nope, but I know a guy who auto-x's and has one.
2. Yes, his car is a little harder to take off in, I actually killed it a few times. Not too bad though, still streetable.
3. Yes, it revs ungodly quick compared to mine.
4. Don't know, but it seems like it would be slower considering it was hard to launch WITHOUT trying to go fast.
5. Pretty much.

Also, It didn't make an amazing difference on my SOTP meter as far as top end acceleration, maybe a little faster. My friend likes it mostly for quicker revs for downshifts, etc.

Yeah, the aluminum FW is a good mod.

It *Does* require that the driver have more
control over the motor.

You can drag launch them, allow a several hundred
more rpm for the clutch dumps.
A lightened car with power mods, no problem
with drag launches. You just have to control
the motor more, like any good performance driver
should.

It frees up some horsepower and the throttle
response is crisp. You'll have to gas the
clutch engagement a touch more to keep it from
bogging the motor down. There's less inertial
energy stored in the flywheel to carry the
motor over.

I see it as a great mod for all performance
applications. Trickiest part is the launch,
but a good driver can work to overcome that.

I've asked about the aluminum fw, and a few people recomended getting a billet steel one. Its still alot lighter than the stock one, but its stronger than the aluminum one.
just what i've heard.
