A4

I am in the process of trying to buy a 2002 Z28 but can't find a M6 in my area. Is there a big performance difference between an auto and manual?

Well it depends on alot of things. First can you drive stick? If not your probably gonna go through the clutch that comes on the car and need to buy a new one. Second are you mostly gonna take it to the track or will you spend alot of your time driving around town. If you go to the track consistently the A4 is better because you'll get more consistent 1/4 times. But on the street a M6 will really help with passing power and over all driving fun. And even if you do get a convertor its not always the best. Trying going up a hill from a stand still with a 4000 stall. Plus it also depends on how much power your looking to do. With a M6 you usually only have to upgrade the clutch. While on a A4 you need a rebuilt racing one that will set you back alot more $$. Im actually running into this problem because I am ordering a LS1 motorsports turbo kit but I also need a new rear end and built tranny, while with a M6 id just need that new clutch and rear end. Ive had my Z for about 8 months and every time I get in it I curse myself for not buying a M6. Its alot harder to drive like a maniac with a A4 than a M6.

Thats my two cents...

The type of rear axle gearing can make a difference.

All M6 cars come with 3.42 rear axle gears.

Cars with A4 come with either 2.73 or 3.23 gears.

If you get a 2.73 geared A4 car, you will be at a slight disadvantage when your car is stock.

whats so difficult about going up a hill with a high stall? my 3500 is very loose, it just takes a bit more pedal and its hardly a a problem.

yes, the auto is more sensitive to the power, but do you really think that the t-56 wont eventually need upgraded? look at other aftermarket 6-speeds...they cost much more than a built auto.

I have moments too where I wish I had a 6-speed, but I drive in a lot of stop-and-go traffic, and I know from experience that a standard gets tiring after awhile, so I'm thankful for the auto at those times. And as far as not being able to drive like a "maniac" with an auto?! ...........................uh, try following me sometime!!!!

I can't disagree with you on that one. While I like how my car drives on the highway with the high gears, it's 1/4 mile performance sucked (only ran 14.008 @ 102.99 ) so one of the first major mods I want to do is swap to 3.42 or 3.73 gears..............................so get 3.23's if you can if you buy an '02 A4 --- then you may not have to change the gears right away.

Ultimately, it comes down to what YOU WANT. Don't settle if you've got your heart set on a 6-speed, but don't let performance differences hold you back.......................they're truly negligable. Having owned/driven both standards and autos, I'd say I'm 80% happy with the auto (20% misses the fun of shifting).

Good luck finding what you want!
