99' Z28 Auto to M6
Yes, SEVERAL people have done the A4 --> M6 conversion (myself included) and been very happy with the outcome
.
You're best to SEARCH for keywords "swap" and/or "conversion" in the Drivetrain Forum ..... you will find LOTS of info
. Also, not trying to "promote" other boards, but LS1Tech has a little more info in the M6 specific forum about the conversion (and, it's - no kidding - LS1 specific!
). There is an entire "sticky" at the top of their forum regarding it.
I've been happy with my car since doing the swap (except for the fact that the tranny I got ended up having a real problem with 2nd gear
). For some people the time/effort/money isn't worth it, but for ME it was

Time: I'm slow
(flame suit on!
) so I took at least ~24 hrs to do everything, from pulling the A4 and all its related accessories, to installing the M6, pedals, etc. I have YET to finish the wiring 100% (never bothered hooking up the clutch switch, so I can start in gear!
) ... SO, technically the work isn't "done" yet!!
..... but I've heard that it can all be done in about ~12 hrs if you know what you're doing, don't waste time, and have a buddy helping.
Effort: I've learned all my "mechanic's" skills from my Dad (licensed mechanic) so I was able to do EVERYTHING myself (except slugging the A4 out and the M6 in, which required a buddy for physical assistance). I found nothing to be very difficult, only "tedious" at times. Would I do it again? In a heart-beat
.
Money: you will find that most people selling their T56 and all related components typically sell for around ~$1500 - 2000, maybe more depending on age/mileage, and if they have factory equipment or aftermarket (clutch/shifter/internals/etc.). By the time I had everything, including SHIPPING the tranny from Florida to Oshawa (int'l shipping sucks!
) I spent a little over ~$3000 (CDN$). Again, at the end of the day, for me, worth it
(figure a performance rebuild of the 4L60E + a stall converter would have cost at least ~$2500 CDN$).

Not to Hijack but curiosity always has the better of me - I just read your Sig... Were both of those times stock with gears as your only mods? Or did you mod alittle more when you went to 4.10's? .4 of a second is awsome with gears alone as a mod... When you went 4.10's did you also go LSD? Also, on the LS1, with 2.73's we're able to top out at around 165ish, not that I care about touching those speeds but would 4.10's lower my top speed or do our cars have enough power to overcome that gear ratio difference?

The ONLY power adding "mod" my car had was a lid. Sorry, it's not "stock" down to the paper filter!
Other than that, only a Flowmaster cat-back, which never showed any difference +/- at the track after installation."Stock" (w/lid) - 13.434 @ 105.80 - just like it says. A4, 2.73's, street tires.
"Best" E/T - 13.021 @ 107.44 - the ONLY difference was 4.10 gears (and a new set of STREET tires, instead of the factory RSA's ..... Hankook's, if that matters).
NOW, after installing the T56, BUT running 3.23 gears (because I broke the 4.10's) I ran 13.402 @ 107.65 with a 60' time of 2.152 (yes, same 60' as stock!) ... and that's on the same Hankook's as 2 years ago (which they're really starting to suck now).
As well, for fun factoids, here are my dyno results:
A4 w/4.10's (and lid as the only mod) - 289 RWHP / 307 RWTQ
M6 w/3.23's (no other changes) - 317 RWHP / 335 RWTQ!!!

..... that's right, 28 RWHP difference between A4 and M6!!

Oh, and fuel economy has improved too!
