'99 SS Exhaust

Ok, I am brand new to cars... just got my SS about 2 months ago and want to do some work on it.. make it my own. Add a few horses on to it.

My question is this... what did the 99 SS's come with stock, as far as exhaust.. on my sticker it says SLP performance exhaust.. it is a dual dual exhaust... Is that stock for the 99 SS or is that an upgrade the original owner got on it.

Another question.. is it worth getting a new filter on these things? what is the performance gain?

if you don't have an airbox lid, get one

Dual duals is the top exhaust option from the factory. Air filters don't have a hp gain, despite what k&n claims, but they are reusable. The lid he is talking about is the most common mod on these cars. It's a air lid that replaces the stock one which flows better and adds some hp. They go for about $100.

oh, ok, thanks guys... what air lid should I look at getting?

So the dual dual exhaust is a step up from the standard SS exhaust? is that what your saying? so adding an aftermarket exhuast wont do much more to it?

and what about a mass air flow sensor?

I have nothing but compliments for the whisper lids (used on both my camaros) but I see a lot of people like the texas speed lids. They all give you the same gains though. I'v heard quite a few posts about SLPs lids not fitting right.

Yeah, there are better exhaust systems but it wouldn't be worth changing IMO unless you want something louder.

I don't know what kind of gains that would have.

it can get tricky when you change mass airflow sensor. I've heard some people have problems with idle after installation and I've heard some people don't. Porting/Polishing the MAF is a common mod. As for exhaust, I would agree, don't change it unless you want a diff sound or look, because you may only gain 5 more hp. I have a Texas Lid, and its okay, I don't like the finish of it, but it fits well and looks pretty high flowing. But I think almost all lids are the same thing. I would do all the free mods too. A guy I know has a 99 SS with SLP lid, Borla exhaust, all free mods, and he runs 13.2. Have fun!
