Unhappy 98 z-28 vs 99 camaro ss

my friend and i are having a arguement. he says his 98 camaro z-28 hard top is faster than my 1999 camaro ss. he says because i have t-tops that my car weighs more than his and is slower. his looks base for a z-28 cloth seats and stick. i have t-tops, 6-disk changer power seats and automatic so he says my car is way heavier and i would get beat. does the ss have enough power to compensate for the weight?

Same difference. It's an LS1. Both can be modded the same and both will make the same power.

The power to weight ratios are nominal. You're talking a hp difference of maybe 2% at most and a weight difference of 3% at most. The truth is, you have an auto and should be able to beat him out of the hole a little easier. How fast he runs you down on the top end is relative to his driving abilities. In other words, there's only one way to find out...run 'em!

Who's the better driver out of you two? They'll probably end up being the winner.

exactly. If the auto car can launch, he will win. If the manual car can launch well, he will win... driver's race. The stick should BARELY pull on the auto car in the top end, but the auto I'm sure would have a lot easier time off the line...

This is all true if the cars are in an equal state of tune.

I agree. My brother and I are working on our cars. I have a 98 Z28 A4 and he has a 99 TransAm M6. Up until last week both cars have ram air and that's all. I would beat him off the line evertime with the Auto but he would slowly catch up and we would be even by about 110mph and he would then pull ahead just slightly. We just both had our cars in the shop this past week, got gears installed, and I got headers. The shop then ran them both on a DynaJet dyno (we get the graphs tomorrow when we pick up the cars) to get baseline numbers as stock and my car with the A4 only ran 298 rwhp on the dyno but he said I need tranny work and I have valvetrain issues. I've have a lifter ticking for a while but I've got ported LS6 heads ready to install, just need some more parts. Anyway, my brothers car dyno'd 320 rwhp. He's got my by 22 rwhp but I hook up better but he does catch me. The fact that we run so close but have 22 rwhp difference was a little surprising to us. Not sure what my new number is but I now have the headers, offroad y, catback, underdrive pulley, new plugs and wires, tranny cooler and thermostat installed (so far). Lots more work to do over the winter but I plan on getting it one way or another to 425 rwhp.

How about this for a twist to the story ...

2002 Z28 A4, 4.10 gears - 13.02 @ 107.44 mph - 289 rwhp
vs.
2002 Z28 M6, 3.23 gears - 13.40 @ 107.65 mph - 317 rwhp

Same car, same driver, same tires . Only difference, transmission & rear gears!! (yeah, I blew up my 4.10's and 4L60E, swapped in a T56 and some 3.23 gears, and that's what my car now does )

Moral of the story, you don't know until you race!!

Don't forget the difference in tire sizes . . . traction, weight & rolling resistance.

those 3.23's are KILLING the M6, factory is 3.42

Dude, I know!!

I've got a set of Motive 3.90's at home waiting to go in . I initally bought them to replace the 4.10's that I broke when I still had the A4, then ~2 weeks later, and the tranny puked!

I'd "technically" rather the 4.10's still with the M6, but hey, I'll try these 3.90's and see how they work . They CAN'T be WORSE than these 3.23's!?

my first question is, are you two a pair of retards?? you both drive camaros and they are both equally the most badass machines ever built for under 40g's. Fight with a mustang owner or a ricer but not another camaro owner who gives a **** besides like everyone else said its the same damn car. my '00 z28ran a best of 13.68 still warm with the slowest combo they built in these cars 2.73's and an auto. i mean who are we kidding no other car built for less than 40k can even touch that. Lets destroy the posers in their rustangs not each other.
