98 LS1 Fbody's?

i'm in the search for an LS1, the IROC is boring me and i need something new and funner .. Anyhow, i have a few friends with LS1's and they told me to steer away from 98's, i asked why and they said there slower, buy a 99+ and stay away form 98's, well i'm just curious about this, anybody feel the same way or have anymore reasoning for me to understand this?

Thanx, Mike

I definetly think that you have been misinformed. There is no difference between a `98 and a `99 except injector size, so why would it be slower I've had mine since new and never heard anything about it.

There's always skepticism about the reliability of the first year of a new model design.

That's probably what your friends are talking about.

I have a 98 Z28 and it runs just as fast as the 99-02 at the track with similar mods. If you get one with an A4 I would make sure it has the performance rear axle though. I have no regrets with buying mine except for the 2.73 gears

Have you ever driven a 3.23-equipped Z28?

If so, is there a noticeable difference between it and your car? I've never driven a Z28 with 2.73s, I was just wondering.

The diffrence between 98 and 99

98 has a diffrent posi
98 has a metal gas tank 99+ has plastic
98 has a diffrent computer can't use predator tuneing everything else works fine.
98 has bigger injectors

I went 13.6@104-106 stock with my car with a 2.26 60'

I think '98s are the fastest

Mine ran 13.3@108 when it was stock. Never lost to a '99 or 2000 LS1...never raced an '01 or '02. If it wasn't stronger, it at least wasn't at a disadvantage.

I wonder what kind of experiences your friends have had. They must have something against classic cars.

If you can afford one, get an '01 or '02 (LS6 intake manifold).

I have driven a 98 TA with an A4 and 3.23s. it seemed much quicker from a stop light (of course). Its one of those MUST mods if you really want to run a quick 1/4 mile.

Don't tell someone to stay away from a certain year/car unless you know what the hell you're talking about. My 98 is just as fast as most other LS1s I've come across. Only regret is the 2.73 gears. But in 2 months or so, I'll have 3.42s.

12.9.......here i come.

I have driven a 3.23 LS1. Noticeable difference. Less traction, better acceleration.

Chris LS1 Bird, Nice dyno nubers. very nice indeed.

98 ss

I have a 98 ss with the m6. I ran a 13.5 at 107 with a 2.3 60' time. That is fast for a car with just a loudmouth exhaust. I should be in the low 13's or high 12's this year if I can launch.
If you can get the power to the ground launching the 12's are there. I am on street tires. I launch like a grandma too. The track I go to sucks and is like launching in the rain. No track prep. On the street there is really no competition unless its a corvette, f-body or some other $70,000 car. They fly stock. You wont be dissapointed.

hmm wow, very interesting.. I'm starting to get a whole new impression here.. Well when it comes down to it i'm only working with about $15,000 so i think i'm only looking at a 98-00 Z28, i've found a few 00' SS's for like $17k, i wish i had more so i could afford a 01-02

So is that the overall assumption? that there is no real difference? I only asked this question becuase i'm finding alot more 98' LS1's than any other year around here.. Maybe i shoudl just test drive them and see for myself..

Thanks for all the help,
Mike

I bought my 98 Formula A4 last May after owning an LT1 Z28.

My Firebird with only a LS1 Motorsports lid, K&N filter, 3" Flowtech cutout, and 2.73s went:

13.24@106.45 w/ 2.05 60', full weight

After the 3.73 install with the identical mods and identical weather 2 weeks later, it went:

12.96@108.36 w/ 2.03 60', same weight

My car dynoed 314rwhp, 327rwtq with the same mods as listed above. So no, 98s aren't weak and "not as fast" as the later cars with the LS6 intake. We just have a bigger cam and injectors from the factory

In addition,if you throw a $400 LS6 intake onto a '98 then you'll make MORE power than a stock '01-'02 because of our larger injectors and bigger cam.I dyno'd 299/314 with a lid and cat-back on my '98 A4.Good luck.
