Post '98 LS1, A4 with GU2 rearend(2.73). What series carrier is back there?

My buddy has a 1998, A4 LS1 and the glove box says GU2 (which means 2.73 gears). His shift selector has "1" on it though. I know for LT1's that if the car has 2.73 gears it does not have the "1" on the gear selector. Does this mean his car has 2.73 gears, or is the code in the glove box and he has 3.23? Also, if he has 2.73 gears what does he need to buy and upgrade to 3.73's? Thanks for any help clearing this up!

Jeff

2 series carrier.... richmond and a couple of others sell a "thick" ring gear for use with the 2 series. or, you could buy a takeoff 3 series torsen unit from slp for $99.

Cool

My car is also an A4 with 2.73's, and 1st gear is marked on the shifter (and it can be selected). I think that 1st gear may have been blocked on LT1 cars - I'm not sure - but I know my friend's '96 T/A (with 3.23's) can't be put into 1st gear - I think it's marked, but he can't select it. I'm not sure if it's a 3.23 vs 2.73 thing, or LT1 vs LS1 thing??

I'm also planning on swapping gears for 3.73's (probably next year). Thanks for the carrier # info!

Talking

Mt LT1 had 1st gear and it originally had 3.23's. I had the thick gears for the 2 series carrier and they worked fine.. Just dont get AUBURN.. those got trashed.. Strange held up fine though.
