They loose about 40 hp and some mileage. Not worth it.

You can do it, but expect a loss of HP because of pulled timing, pre-det under load (especially in hot weather) and probably some hesitation. Not a good idea IMO...

What kind of MPG's are you all getting on a stock F body with an automatic.

Just to say, I'm diffinatly not new to the F body, as I have had an 89 Formula 350, 97' Z28 with a 396 and D1 blower, 02' SS Camaro, and 98' TA, but I never drove one as a daily driver, and I'm looking to buy a 99-02 F body thats stock as can be as a daily driver. Just tired of driving slow beaters!!!

I average about 22mpg when I'm being nice 50c/50h . My neighbor took a trip doing all highway and said he got a 28mpg

Do you think this could cause the knock sensor to go off?

Basicly stock, I ran 86 octane and got a best of 30 mpg, that was with a nice 125 mph sprint on that tank. On 87 I never got worse than mid to low 20's mpg and still ran a 13.56 @ 106 or 107 (been too long ago) with a horrid launch.

Mine isn't an A4 but from my personal experience, you are not going to lose 40hp and much milage. If you even lose any. I switched between low and high octane and experienced no loss or increase of performance. With 87 octane I was still out running Mach 1's, an LT1 on spray, and running the same as other stockish LS1s on the street.

Now that my car isn't stock, it would be a whole different story though.

Terrible idea.

These cars are 10.2:1 and are meant to be run on premium fuel.

The End.

40 HP loss??? That seems a little exaggerated to me .

Also, we can run my Dad's '73 Camaro on premium fuel with no pinging whatsoever, and it's running pop-ups w/ 11.25:1 compression and a pretty extreme Comp cam.

I've run DOZENS of tanks of 87 through my LS1. The mileage has NEVER been affected ... hell, I've probably gotten BETTER mileage just because I try to drive it a little nicer if I'm running the 87 . I do tend not to hammer on it much, or hold it WOT as it will ping slightly if I do. BUT, to just get out on the highway and cruise with the car, it runs absolutely fine on 87. Typically though, I only run 87 in the colder months of the year (late into the fall --> early spring) when the temperature is colder and the fuel doesn't ignite so quickly anyway.

Al / Kraest, I know you guys know your stuff, but your statements almost seem to blatent??? GM wouldn't "approve" of 87 octane (in the owner's manual) if it wasn't ok to run it .

I know in Canada you guys live in igloos and enjoy 40 degree summers, but down here in the 95 degree 95% humidity South, I don't think the car would even be able to pull enough timing on a bolt-on car to prevent pre-ignition.

Yeah, you're right, it's pretty cold out there today . I think it's hitting a high of only 26°? . Oh yeah, celcius .

The difference in price is about $3 per tank. If you fill up twice a week, we are only talking about around $312 per year. Not really worth it to me. My 1998 Regal GS requires premium as well. Changing driving habits will probably help your pocketbook out more than running 87 in it.

FWIW, the owner's manual says running 87 is OK, but you might notice slightly decreased performance.

I know people who have run 87 on their LT1's and LS1's and they seemed fine.

Up to you.
