6th at 60?

Is it ok to drive my 99 SS in 6th gear at 60 mph? It doesn't seem to be struggling at all but it is turning really low rpms.

Thank You

We don't. 6th is saved for 65 mph and up.

Re: 6th at 60?

factory manual suggest 50mph as the shift for 6th gear...

granted that is assuming no hills or real traffic.

it's ok..just don't try to accelerate like that.

Re: 6th at 60?

Anything over 40 MPH is just fine with normal gearing. I drive in 6th gear at that speed all the time, and my car currently has 230K miles on it with no probs. You can accelerate just fine too, just not anything more than minimal throttle till you get to around 2000+ RPM.

Re: 6th at 60?

It's fine, gm designed it that way so it gets good gas mileage. On cruise with stock gearing i used to get 29mpg on the highway before all my mods.

Nothing like spanking ricers in 6th gear, while getting 30+mpg while you're at it.

Re: 6th at 60?

Damn I can't imagine hitting 6th at 40mph

I usually get into 6th at 60 and hit the cruise control. Seems to do ok even up the hills on my commute to school.

I wish everyone would have said it's ok if you have LT's, full exhaust, and full intake mods

I just learned something. I never knew that Manual Camaros had cruise control.

Re: 6th at 60?

Z06's can cruise in 6th gear at 35 MPH comfortabley. Honestly, I don't see why you guys DON'T use 6th gear when cruising at 40ish MPH....Usually if you have a V8 you want to save all the gas you can when your not opening it up.

Re: 6th at 60?

I use 6th gear from 55mph on up. It doesn't hurt anything, keeps the car quiet, and saves gas.

as for manual fbodies having cruise control? I thought it was common knowledge, but I'm learning lately that a lot of people never knew a manual transmission car could have CC.

Re: 6th at 60?

What COULD it be hard on? What would be the problem with mashing it at 900 RPMs and 6th gear? Hard on the engine? Just curious.

I'm in 4th at 55 MPH, never out of 5th. Street racing I shift into 5th at 100. I like to listen to the engine so I keep it at 2500-4000 all the time. I also spend about $10 a day on 93 octane.

Re: 6th at 60?

well then you're flooding the engine, could lead to knock, etc.

Could lead to knock? How?
Like I say, I shift at high RPMs, but I'm just wondering.
