5.7 block crack @ oil pan

Since about May my 2002 Z28 has been leaking about a quart per month onto the garage floor. Looking under the car it seemed like the oil pan gasket was leaking, took it to the shop. Turns out it's about a 1/4" tiny crack in the block at the pan. I'm inclined to keep adding oil once a month or so and otherwise leave it alone; am interested in any other opinions.

"could have it welded"

I've never had this done...is it something that I should take to a specialized shop? Doesn't sound like something the Chevy dealer would mess with, but I could be wrong.

You would need to hire a good welder to Tig weld it.

as a thought, anyone think jbweld would stick if the pan was removed and cleaned thoroughly?

otherwise, have it tigged by someone who knows what they are doing.

Re: 5.7 block crack @ oil pan

I would doubt JB weld would work since there are so many bolts holding the pan on that the pan edge is pretty stressed. I am not even sure how you would get a crack there unless you hydrolock a pan bolt.

You said the block has the crack right? That is going to be a tough repair since you have to drop the pan, clean it, weld it, then file it smooth at the bottom of the block before re-installing the pan. Hopefully you have a buddy with a shop, otherwise find a little mom and pop place and hire a good welder to come into their shop.
