4.10s

Just wondering on what the mpg dropped by when going from the 3.42s to the 4.10s? Honestly. I lost 3 going to 3.55s from 2.73s in my Mustang so I know there must be some difference. What did the rpms rise to while cruising on the highway in 6th? Did it affect cabin noise (exhaust being louder)?
I dont yet have a Camaro but trying to get as much info on individual mods before I buy one in the spring (hopefully) and go nuts w/ the mod cash and end up unhappy as I have w/ my 'stang. It will see very limited (perhaps only once or twice) track use, but I love to rip around. Would 3.73s be a better gear to look to or are the 3.42s sufficient?

I have done a search and did not turn up an satisfactory answers.
Thanks.

Wow, 71 people have looked at this and none have 4.10s, or if they do, don't know anything about them?

Sorry, I go through all the posts and only respond to those I know something about. Have 3.23's on an A4. Know nothing about the magnitude of the change in MPG due to a higher revving engine.

Tony
<BTW have you used the search function? Try 41* mileage

From what all i have read, heard, and know, you only loose about 1-2 MPG, due to the 6th gear

on the highway most people say that they lose about 1 maybe 2 MPG.

But in town, I have heard a lot of people say that they GAINED MPG. this is most likely due to the fact that you can often comfortably and easily tool around in one gear higher than with the 3.42's

I gained about 1 mpg with 3.73s in town.

never checked with my 4.11s, but It wouldnt really be accurate as I have a cam and they are in a ford 9 inch. both which will affect mileage

I had 4.10s in my '98 Z - Auto. For mpg, I was getting about 19 hwy (55-70mph driving). If I drove it nice and easy I could get about 250-260 miles out of a tank. The norm was 220.

But the mph was the least of my worries. Check out this reply I just did in anoter forum about my gears:

http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...threadid=34412

Again, my car was an auto, so I had more powerloss.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Milo.

Thanks guys for the responses. What rpm are/were you guys at w/ 3.73s on the highway? Is there much of a difference between 3.42s and 3.73s? I dont want to lose too much driveability or mpg as when I get one it will be a daily driver and will be driven long distances. After all the mods I did to my Mustang I ended up hating it. Now that I have taken some parts off and have some better driveability I like it much more.

How ya doing i have 4.10 installed in my 2000 ss and i can not tell you much about the gas mileage, but at 70 mph on the highway it is right around 1900 rpms, not bad, and you can look for about a 3 tenth reduction in et's give or take one.

I had 4.10s in mt Trans Am for about 2yrs.70mph on the highway in 6th gear was just below 2 k rpms on the tach.As far as mileage went with the stock cam I was still getting around 24mpg on the highway at about 75-80mph.I hope this helps.

I recently switched from 3.73's to 4.10's and really haven't noticed any change in gas mileage.

i have 3:73s and I tach 2k at 80, which is somehow the same as many guys with 4:10s I know....That is in the TA...

ZF-Body had you taken your car to the track with the 4.10s? What kinda mileage were you getting? I doing gears in my 98Z soon...Was the car shifting all 4 gears at a reasonable time in the 1/4? Did you use drag radials to run at the track? Cause I got a 3.42 ring gear and pinion I may put in, but I may get some lower gears, so I was wondering...

hey man. my cars not an ls1but an lt1, 95.. m6, had 3.42's, put 4.10's in april. lost no more than about 20km (12 miles?) per tank. every time i fill up, i always reset the odometer to 0 (have always done that since my first z(which was an auto with 2.73's) just to keep tabs on the mileage). the funny thing is, the best mileage i ever recorded was with the 4.10's (about 440kms) (which is way beyond good for me). but on average , i do get 20 kms less per tank than before. also, im pretty sure ls1's have a slightly (1.5 gallons?) larger fuel tank. id really have to push to spin through or go sideways in second with 3.42's, with the 4.10's, whole different story bubba with 4.10's, im going sideways in second , and dont really hook till 80-100km/h (60mph). ive got yoko a520's. they hooked great the first few months when new, but now theyre like all the other tires ive had . im sure a pair of nittos would complement the setup nicely though. second never did nothing for me with the old gears, but with the4.10's, , i literally get a hardon everytime i mash it. either way, i wouldnt fret it really, whatever you get. if you dont like whatver gears you got , swap em. theres 2 ways you could go on this: the expensive way, and the cheaper way. new gears, install kit, some places rape for labour, youre talking like 500-600 bucks for everything. quite expensive in my book. i bought my gears used off this board for 100, got them installed for 175canadian (100 us) and didnt use an install kit or nothing. total cost 200. been running them for 7 months no prob. you really gotta listen to hear any whine. anyway, good luck with whatever you choose and i hope this has been of help to you. adios.

I never got a chance to go to the track with the 4.10s. The broke a week before I was going to go. For my mileage, I was getting about 19mpg with highway driving, or about 220 miles per tank on average. I think at 80mpoh it was just over 2k in the RPM range....though I don't remember now. Do a search with my user name and "4.10" - you'll see lots of posts by me.

The shifting on my car was horrible!! I can't stress how many times I reprogramed my cars computer trying to find the right shift points - it never happened. I even called Hyertech and asked for help....but they couldn't help me. It was bad. I hated those gears, and will never go back to them. Not only was the shift patteren ALWAYS off, but I could never hook up. I redid my whole suspension to try and fix it - but nothing worked. The only thing I found 4.10s good for is burnouts, and getting sideways at 60 if you went WOT.

I did not run any drag radials at the track, just some 16" stockers. As I said above, about a week before the race my gears broke. I was install a TA Cover, and when we took the old cover off, 2 teeth fell out....Anyways, If you look at my sig, you can see my mph, and my ¼ mile time. With the mph I ran, it should be around 12.7 - 12.9. I went pretty easy off the line, as I wasn't how the car would handle the new gears at the track....by the time I got done, it was to late for another run.

Maybe 4.10s would fit me better if I had heads / Cam, and a 12 bolt, TQ converter, and some slicks...but for now, thats out of the question. 3.73 seems to be the best gear that I've found, and works wonderfully with my new suspenion.

With the 3.42's my rpm's would be at about 1900 between 75-80mph. With the 4.10's my rpm are now at about 2200 at the same speed. I have not bothered with the mpg, but this shoud give you a vague idea
