305 Tires hitting Wheel Well

I just put on my new Nitto 305 NT555R's in the rear, on a 10.5 rim. When I drive at normal speeds and gratually accelerate they are fine. However when I launch and really get on it they seem to be rubbing against the inner wheel well or maybe fender, not sure yet but definitely hitting against something and it only happens when I floor it. It is a tight fit but I checked around the tire and it's not hitting anything. Has anyone put on a similar sized tire and had to do a little modification to their fender or wheel well in order for a tire like this is fit properly. And what do you use to adjust it, a hammer?

Re: 305 Tires hitting Wheel Well

i think its just your normal suspension travel

the f-bodies rear suspension uses a panhard bar which means it moves he rear end side to side just a little bit when the rear end goes up and down

this normally isnt a problem until u run really wide tires
because when the rear goes up the panhard bar moves it over slightly
and when the rear goes down, panhard bar does the same thing (funny cuz the panhard bar's job is to keep the rear end from moving side to side)

so yea, if it is a tight fit now, when u launch u snd all the weight to the rear, causing the rear end to go up close to the chassis and the panhar bar moves the rear over slightly causing the tires to rub on the inner fender

Re: 305 Tires hitting Wheel Well

Last night I took the rear wheels off and I could see where the tire was rubbing b/c it left a noticeable wear mark, I took a hammer to both inner wheel wells where it was hitting, I think I solved that problem. Now the only thing that looks pretty close to the tire is the bump stop, might need some modification, all this week its going to be raining, so hopefully later this week I'll see if I solved the problem, thanks for the help.

ok.. so for some reason you just like the look of the large rear tires and dont have anywhere near the power needed to justify the need for large rear tires.. ok..

Have you felt the decrease in top speed? Is it noticeable?

Ok, didn't just get these tires b/c they look good, don't really care about that. I talked to two venders and both said that the 305 was the proper size for my rim. Any how do you know how much power adders I plan on putting on my car in order to justify these tires. This car is not a daily driver and I only plan on adding more performance mods.

What is the purpose of the bump stop, which looks like it might be the only thing still rubbing. What would happened if I decided to remove it?

295/35 ZR18 is what a Z06 has on its rear (before the C6..) sure its only 10 lower.. but geesh.. it would probably hit alot less..

regardless..
The bumpstop or "jounce bumper" is part of the shock.. is that the piece you are talking about or is it mounted inside on the body?

And for the 305 tires, initially I wanted to get the 285 or maybe the 295, however the 305 is what a reputable vendor recommended for my setup and I think they know a little more about tires then me.

Re: 305 Tires hitting Wheel Well

Just FYI, anyone who is interested in putting a 305 size tire in the rear on a LS1 and are worried about rubbing, I wanted to let everyone know that I had to do only minor modifications to the inner wheel well with a hammer, about 5mins of work. And since then haven't not had any issues with rubbing, so you should worry if they are going to fit or not, b/c they should with minor effort.

Re: 305 Tires hitting Wheel Well

Theyre right, 305s arent the size you shouldve went with. You shouldve went with 335s!!!!!! . I ran the same tire on my Z06 wheels (10.5) and my C6 (9.5) wheels and youre right, very little work is needed to get these to fit and they look awsome. Although 295s are a cute size too
