Re: 2000 z28 LS1 vers 2002 z28 LS1

i found an old article about diff between yrs. 99-00 had 26lbs injectors, 01-02 had 28lbs. 02's had a redesigned pressed metal head gasket. besides the already mentioned diff. i'd like to add that autos have torque mgmt factory tuned which lowers horsepower by 10. if you delete its really hard on the tranny. im done.

Like most have said, it would be better to go for the '02, i.e. LS6 intake, no EGR valve, and more power. For reference, my stock '01 SLP SS dyno'd at 325.1 HP with 155K on her. Good luck.

Ended up getting the 00 . It only has 65k on it and is like new, however it has some valve train noise starting at about 1800 rpm, then seems to disappear at higher rpms . Found some very tiny metal specs in the oil filter which concerns me. Oil plug had some specs on it as well.I have read that valve train noise is not uncommon , however not sure how much before one looks into the engine . Will have a mechanic check it out.

Sounds like a good excuse to put some ported heads, cam, and new lifters in.

congrats on your new ride, get that noise checked out so you dont breakdown while battling a rustang! cheers! any local speed shops? never hurts to ask if a club is having a dyno day and you might get a tune for say $250 vs $400 to $500!

Re: 2000 z28 LS1 vers 2002 z28 LS1

Had a GM tech pull the valve cover, found the pushrods and rockers were ok. Most of the noise is from #1 cyl . He is suggesting pulling heads, replacing lifters and probably cam to the tune of about $2500 . No guarantee that will fix it either. The noisy valve train clatter is loud enough that it is embarrassing driving down the road at 2500 rpm .

It would probably be half that at a good performance shop, and you will end up with a better cam too. For that much you could probably get some ported heads too.

Went inside engine . A damaged lifter destroyed a lobe on the cam . New cam on its way. Not sure what may have caused this on a low km engine. Maybe roller bearing failed on lifter.

Yes, disappointing, however hopefully will have a solid low km ride when it done. Now that cam is out it looks like a defective cam rather the lifter causing the issue. The finish is right off one lobe. Explains the fine metal specs in the filter. Replacing it with the stock cam, but looking into an ls6 intake.

Re: 2000 z28 LS1 vers 2002 z28 LS1

Ligenfelter makes a cam - The GT2-3 - that works good on a stock setup (you need to update springs though). It is something like 207-220 .571/.580 118.5 LSA. I would throw that in with springs while you are in there. I ran that cam on a stock tune with mild ported heads and picked up around 80 hp. Not to date myself, but the heads were ARE, and not very good, so you could probably do better.

Just a thought. I personally hate putting something back stock.

Re: 2000 z28 LS1 vers 2002 z28 LS1

This looks like a good tread to post this question. I have a 2002 Z28 wit the LS6 intake and less than 40,000 miles. I am thinking of adding long tube American Racing Headers and a Cam package. I am looking for a street cam that gives reasonable idle but where the package increased HP by 80 - 100. Can anyone suggest specs for the cam.

An interesting read. I just bought a 2000 SS convertible with 70,000 miles. Your info gives me something to think about for future upgrades.
