2000 SS, 4.10 gears and eating oil
It's either me or the dealerships are on crack, I put in my 4.10 gears like 2 months ago, and since i have noticed my car is eating about a quart of oil every 3000 miles. I put Mobile 1 10w30 and it's in chicago weather, which is mild rainy and cold as hell in the winter. I went to the dealership to talk to them and they said it was normal for GM cars to eat oil if they are driven over 3k RPM's for long period's of time. They said that's normal....which is fine, anyone else hear about this?
Sadly, yes the LS1 does have a tendency to burn oil. Both my 98 SS and my 01 Z28 burned oil with the stock 3.42 gears. I think there is a TSB on the 01s to replace the piston rings, but most LS1s seem to do it to a certain degree.
do you think I shoudl change the oil more often, more like ever 2000 miles then? Would that be safer, I don't wanna put any of that goo crap they sell at pep boys to stop oil leaks, or anything dumb like that...did you just leave it as it was?
I have a 2000 SS here and it eats oil like none other. I dont use "CAGs" but it is still "on" so I have to get it up to 3k or give it more than 25% throttle so I can shift into 2nd.
I change my oil every 3k and just add oil until the 3k has come.No need to change under 3000 miles. Some people really believe in the synthetic oil and go over 5000 miles before a change, but i dunno about that.

oh yeah your 4.10s put you into higher rpms faster so that is probably a big factor in the burning of the oil
btw.... how do you enjoy your 4.10s? would you ever consider changing to 3.73s? or even back to 3.42s? do they whine? do you have a beefed up rear end?
thx

Honestly I would put 3.73 but not the stock ones back in. now that I have had the chance to play around with 4.10's this much, it's like, well 3.73 would still allow me to haul a little *** when needed and yet still maintain somewhat better gas mileage...but then if we're going to own a car like this, gas should be the lease of our worries....
