1998 LS1 Cylinder Head Recall information

I understand some 1998 camaro LS1s had a recall for improperly machined cylinder heads (apparently caused an exhaust leak), and I am trying to get more info on this so I can see if my car, which was bought used, was subject to this recall. Could any of you direct me to a website or other info where I could check this out? Thanks.

My buddy has a 98 and hasn't had any problems like that, maybe he can chime in here.

Thumbs up

I bought a new '98 Z28 and had to take it in for the head recall. All they did was check some numbers on the block, intake, and heads to determine my engine wasn't one they were looking for. I'm sure any dealer would look for you at no charge. They might even be able to tell if your car had been checked prior to you buying it. Hope this helps. Later.......

I'm sure they would. They told me the problem was with equipment at one of the plants where LS1 Motors were made. I guess the machine that grinds the valve seats was out of tolerance or something like that. Not all LS1 motors would have the problem, in fact, I guess they didn't think a lot of the suspect motors actually left that plant. It only took the guy a few minutes. They hoisted the car up, checked some numbers on the block. Lowered it, checked some numbers on the intake manifold and heads. After checking a list of suspect numbers, and not finding mine on there, they told me I was good to go. I put over 20,000 miles on that car. It didn't use a drop of oil and was very strong. Anyway, I'm sure they wouldn't care about your mods, as they would NOT have anything to do with the recall problems. Hope this helps. Good luck.............

I'm sure if yours was one of the motors with a problem they'd just fix it. Doesn't hurt to dream though

You still might want them to check it out. They might give you some sort of "allowance" towards your new heads if your car happened to be one with the defective heads. Like I said in an earlier post, they really didn't think there were many "suspect" engines that made it into cars. Most of the motors were fixed at the plant with the problem. You have a good looking car. I have an anniversary edition and really don't want to mod it so as to keep it original and all. I'm thinking about getting another Z28 or SS to drive daily and mod some. I love these cars!!! Later....
