17x11
17x11
I'm toying with the idea of getting 2 extra rims with DRs for the track. how much of a difference is there between the 16x8 and the 17x11 rims as far as traction is concerned, when equiped with the same Drag Radial tires? They will both hook up, but will a 315 hook a LOT better than a 245?
Anyway, the other question: Can I run a set of 17x11 in the rear at the track with 315 DRs with no modifications (ie hammering, rolling the lip, spacers, etc)???

Some say they fit with no problems, though I had to hammer the inner fender for mine to not rub. The 315's will hook a lot better, but will typically weigh more which will slow you back down. A set of BFG DR's on 16x8's, or better yet ET Streets, for track use only might be the way to go.
also realize that going from 16" to 17" will drop your sidewall, which can adversely affect traction.
and as far as physics is concerned, friction (ie traction) has NOTHING to do with contact patch, ONLY of the frictional coefficient of the two materials (road and tire) and mass.
f=um
force of friction = coefficient of friction x mass
granted there are other things that come iinto play with something as complicated as a car excelerating. but the idea is the same
