160 degree thermostat in 02 LS1 in the winter months

Will I notice a decrease in driveability d/t a the fuel mixture being too rich. I currently have the HPPIII in an M6 and can adjust for the stats but I was told winter/or the cold could cause some problems. ???

Do not put a 160* in your car. In 00, GM designed the LS1 to run at 210* for emissions purposes. If you put in a t-stat that cold, I've heard people saying their cars throw the SES light because it's too cold for the PCM, and will make it think it's not meeting emissions. That's why they make the LS1 180* t-stat, for the 00+ cars.

Run a 180*, it'll run a lot cooler and still keep you from popping that SES light

Bone, would the HPPIII override this. It asks specifically which stat is being used. I assume for that purpose of reprogramming the PCM.

I installed a hypertech 160 thermostat in my 2002 z28 and have had no lights or problems. I have the predator, which allows me to adjust my fan settings. But even with the predator off the car I still get no SES lights or anything. The car's heater still gets hot, and the defroster still defrosts with the quickness. I like the mod.

I bought the slp 160' thermostat and fan control switch but haven't yet installed it on my 02 firehawk. You got me thinking now? Should I install it or not? Slp doesn't make a 180' thermostat that I saw. I'm not so sure I like slp anymore.

I have a 160* tstat and my fans set to come on early optimized for it with HPP3. No codes or other issues, of course I'm in Florida. The stock tstat is 180* To run cooler in traffic with the A/C off you need to get the fans on at a lower temp.

The HPP series doesn't tell your PCM that a lower temp t-stat is in there. It just allows the fans to come on at a lower temp to keep the car cooler. The temp range for which they come on depends on what t-stat you're using.

And the 00+ cars did not come with a 180* from the factory. I believe it was a 195*. That's why when you drive a 98-99 at operating temp, it stays right above the first hash mark. On a 00+, it stays right in the middle.

Emissions requirements. The hotter an engine runs, the better emissions it puts out.

I'm running a 160* thermostat in my 2001 WS6. It never threw a code during the 6 months I had it installed without changing the fan turn on point.

I used the HPP to change the fans turn on, and still don't get an SES light.

As for winter heating ... I still get plenty of heat in the winter.

Hmmm...my HPP3 book says stock tstat is 195, but my owners manual says 180 for the LS1/195 for the 3800 V6.
