12 Bolt/9 Inch
12 Bolt/9 Inch
I am looking at either a 12 bolt or 9 inch for my first mod. I dont want to have any weak links i my drive train, so that when I add more power or sticky's I dont have to worry. This may be a dumb question but when you order these things do they come all assembled and ready to bolt up? Or am I gonna have to pay somebody to set up the ring gear and $hit? Also, if they do come already assembled, do they run quiet, or are they noisey? I HATE GEAR WHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
reading from many posts about this.....
For 12 bolts:
Some of them need umm, brake mounts or somethign like that to be mailed in so they can weld em on. I think Strange requries that. Moser is more bolt in I believe, except for a few little things like sway bar mounting and brake line clips.. If you call and ask, they will tell you.
You can also order the pieces yourself and ask somenoe to build it from scratch for you..
Some people had luck just trusting the ring, pionion, etc were setup properly.. Some people found that they were out of wack.. I say if your spending $2000 on a rear end, you get it checked to make sure. Again, some people have gear whine, some people don't... I think more people have slight gear whine than not. I say find the best shop around you and have them check it out.
9" : not sure but I suspect something similar..
12 bolt might be a little lighter and a hair more efficient... but reading more, it soudns like the 9" has more posi options for roadracing since its more popular..
You mgiht as well get a new driveshaft and yoke while your at it.. I never got the lowdown about it, but you may/maynot need a different length driveshaft. Then next to go, is your clutch.. Then after that, it'll probably be your transmission.. welcome to the game of "the weakest link"
