1/4 Mile times/ power gain question

Hey guys,

I will very soon be purchasing an LS1, and I have a couple of questions about mods ( I did a search, my computer does not like find anything for some reason....sorry guys if you already answered any of this).

I am really curious to know what Mods I should do at the beginning. I am only 17 (turning 18 soon, yay) so I have a very limited budget. I will have something like $400 set aside each month for modding this car. I will be driving her daily, and I *have* to pass inspection and Emissions. And, if entirely possible, keep the warrenty (if adding a Cat-back voids it, or basically modding it at all voids it, disregaurd this concern).
So what should I put on (this includes Free-mods).

After about 30 min of searching and thinking, this is what my very editable list looks like:

Hooker Cat-back
MAC Mid-legnths with Y-pipe (if these are illigal in NJ, someone please tell me!)
Whisper Lid w/ K&N Filter (will take out when I bring to dealer to get something fixed to avoid loss of warrenty)
NGK Plugs
MSD 8.5 MM Wires
Perhaps, some free mods.

Also, what would you expect my 1/4 mile to be. I am a very young driver, so I would add .2-.4 right off the bat I will be driving an M6 Camaro Z/28 with either stock tires or some All-season tires. This car will not be stripper, either. I will be at Englishtown, NJ most likely first run in the spring.

Thanks everyone!!

Have a happy beginning of a Holiday Season!

Todd

Already had an LT1...and...I paid for everything. Neither was a gift from anyone. I work my butt off to get these cars and I can garentee I am not the first nor last. Nor will this car be the fastest of my friends cars.

Quick Run-down

89 LX Stang with about 360 RWHP
03 Evo.....
01 SS w/ 380 RWHP
03 Saleen Mustang (rich kid, father bought for him...)

etc.

And I would proudly proclaim that I never gotten a speeding ticket in the 5 months I had my *bright red* LT1 Camaro during the summer. Simply becuase I don't drive like a maniac on the street, only at the track do I let her loose. Remeber, I have to pay for gas so goosin it is not an option lol. But please, what can I expect from those mods listed above!

Thanks all

Todd

I would get some good tires. Good tires help a lot. I got my LS1 a month before I turned 18.

ditch the hooker....they tend to rust from what i've heard

you'll like the sound of a magnaflow better or if you want loud, go for a Loudmouth. magnaflow can by bought on ebay for $285 and the LM is about $300 i think

look into www.texas-speed.com for their lids, nicer in my opinion.

maybe look into a ported throttlebody, very hard to detect for warrantee checks.

the headers would probably pass sniff test but maybe not the visual if you have that...cause it moves the cats.

Hmm, ok I will definatly ditch the Mid-legnths. I will go with JBA shorties and an SLP Y-pipe. Quick question though, if I have a Cat-back on my car, and I have visual, will I fail inspection? And the SLP Y-pipe is legal too, right?

Tires are a big +. I probably picked up 5 tenths just from tires, because the stock ones sucked so bad.

Also, I'd get a pair of SFC's. Very important to do right away.

A lid is another important thing. Any lid will do. Choose whichever you like most.

A catback is basically good for the exhaust not change, and some different tips. Don't expect too much of a HP gain though.

If you're still worried about emmissions, get a hot-cam. I've heard multiple testimonies of people still passing emmissions. Plus the car will still sound near-stock. By buddy's running one and is putting down 383 rwhp.

With a M6> Mac Headers and an offroad pipe (you can always weld cats in later> the mac pipe with there cats doesnt flow well), Pacesetter has got a good header out for the money right now, Magnaflow, lid & filter, ASP pulley , 410 gears , Nitto drag radials. I like NGK tr6s , would skip the wires unless you really need them, As for warranty , once you start modding It really depends on the car dealer, some dont break ***** some wont touch a car if they see mods.

Remember he is trying to keep his warranty...headers will likely void your warranty. You can probably get by with a lid and cat back. Also a ported throttle body will probably get by also.If you want the most power with the least mods get a 2001-2002 model. Those are very strong cars without mods. They have good factory manifolds,so shorty headers would serve no purpose. Also come with a LS6 intake and the chance of an LS6 block. Here is what I recommend you do and still have a good daily driver and pass warranty..

Lid
Catback
SLP y-pipe
Ported throttle body
Gears
LS6 cam
Subframe connectors
Short throw if M6

Gears and cam would hard to detect unless they took the motor and rear apart. You can lose a warranty for DRs so that is a judgement call for you.

Food for thought.
Mod the car so that you can utilize the power that you have then add power.
That's what I did. Went from 13.49 @ 105mph to 12.15 @ 111.8mph and I still have the stock cast iron manifolds, LS1 intake, throttlebody, MAF.

LCAs
LCA relocation brackets
Tires
Subframe connectors
Lid (stock filter is fine)
supersucker ramair
cutout

You could get everything on the list above except the tires for around $600. And with the tires (drag radials) out perform many higher hp cars on the track while maintaining your warrantee, drivability, and fuel economy.
It's always exciting adding power mods. Great conversation items. But so is out running should be faster cars with a lot less invested.

Would the LCA's, the brackets and the SFCs do anything to the handling of the car or affect the ride quality of the car significantly?
I think I am going to get Firestone Firehawks as the tires, also.

depending on who warranties your car they could say putting on NGK plugs voids the warranty you kinda have to make up your mind mods yes or no not well if it voids the warranty then i wont do it blah blah blah if you go through a ****ty dealer they will screw you whenever they want...oh youve got a poly tranny mount sorry you voided your transmissions warranty...oh you put in NGK plugs...nope you need to use ac delco stuff sorry about the bent pushrod but you voided your warranty blah. and yes in nj if you move the cats its illegal but weve got two years between inspection here dude just get the car inspected and put on LT's with an off road ypipe and swap back to stock or get a catted y made in 2 years lol if you still have the car then. Thats my take on things.

Yep it would tighten it up and make it bite better off of the line.
