02 LS6 in 99 SS

02 LS6 in 99 SS

I have a deal that I may be able to get a 2002 LS6 for $3500.00 It has never been to the track and has 12700 miles on it. I have many questions about that.

First off. Not sure of the best place to put these questions.

Is this a good deal?

Will it run on the stock computer? Could I just get the car tuned?

Will everything(accesseries) bolt right to it?

It has no intake(LS6). Put on another LS6?

I may just do a cam in it. What would be good for about 420 at the wheels??

Car is bolt ons with 4:10 gears.

any other concerns with this swap?

Thank You

Chris

That's a good price seeing how a brand new LS1 is around $7,000.

In my personal opinion, there's many similarities between the LS1 and LS6 engines that for $3,500, you can buy some nice mods for your LS1 that will put you above what an LS6 puts out, in terms of power. If your engine runs perfect, I wouldn't take it out of the car for another engine.

ya I agree with him, getting another engine for that price is alot considering the power that you would get. Sure being able to say I have an LS6 is cool and all, but I'd rather say I have 450 horses. Your even talking aout putting in a different cam, which is even more money. I just read in my Summit magazine they have head/cam packages for 2200 bucks--which includes new heads without core charge fully assembled-(I believe) and CNC stage 2 design, also included is the LS6 intake. This is a great price tag consiering the power you get. Hell i've been reading that the STS rear turbo with 5psi is worth 410-420 rear horses and the kit will run you the same price as that LS6 engine

**** at that price buy it, re-sell it for some nice profit, and spend the profit on some mods

for 3500, buy a set of AI/Loyd heads, a nice cam, and some long tubes and be at 450 fwhp

Ok here's another thought. Buy the LS6 and install it. Sell your LS1 motor for mod money.
Advantages are you'll have the stronger better block. You'll have some LS6 head cores if you decide to go ported.
And def. put at least an LS6 intake back on it. It should run ok with the stock tune but would benifit from a custom tune.

Thanks for the help guys. One more thing to consider is I do have 110k on the 99 LS1 now, but with no oil leak or consumption. Forgot to add that and I am sure that will change some of your answers.

Thanks again

keep your LS1 motor for later

install a LS6, you would be able to beat just about Z28 with bolt ons even if you leave you motor bone stock. if you have the cash go for it. like they said, the LS6 would be better for upgrading if you decide to go that route and if you dont, you still have a good motor.

That is exactly the direction I am thinking right now.

I would buy the LS6. Low mileage and ready to go. And if you want to mod later, sell the LS1 and have fun moding your new Z06 engine.

Although there are other minor differences, the LS-6 can just be considered an LS-1 with a heads and mild cam package.

If I were going to spend $3500, I'd rather take the LS-1 out, put new rings and bearings in it, then with the other $3200 you could do QUITE a bit to get way above what you'd get by merely dropping in the LS-6 motor.

i don't know if supporting vendors sell crate engines however you can get a longblock ls6 at gmpartsdepot.com for about $5700. if you spend the cash and get the heads ported and a good tune i would think you'd have 400rwhp. a real 03 cobra killer.

I just installed an LS6 longblock in my '98 Z28...my stock LS1 developed a knock. I paid $5229 shipped for the longblock and it had the C5 oil pan and pulley installed on it, but had the F-Body oil pan, windage tray, and dip stick in a box in the crate. I sold the C5 pan and pulley for $350, so I paid $4879 for a brand new motor WITHOUT exchange. It even comes with a 12 month/12K mile warranty from GM that includes parts and labor, and it doesn't matter who installs it to get that warranty. Personally, I would rather pay to have the new motor over the used one for $3500 because of the warraty and the fact that you know EXACTLY what you're getting with the new motor.

An LS6 longblock will run just fine on the '99 computer. You won't be getting everything out of it, but it'll run just like the stock LS1. I'm still running on my '98 stock tune and as soon as the motor is broken in, I plan to get it dyno tuned.

All accessories will bolt right up. You will have to use the F-Body pulley and you'll have to modify the PCV system, but all that takes is about a foot of hose and a coupler. Alt, AC, PS, etc., all bolt right up.

I bought an LS6 intake from SLP so I could keep my EGR. However, it really does look like even the stock LS1 intake would have bolted right up as well.

If you want to see some pics from my swap, take a look at my website:
