Z-28 as a Tow Vehicle?

OK perhaps this is a realy dumb question. I know the standard tow rating for my 1994 6 speed is like a half ton.

Now I have my eyes on a travel trailer toy box to tow my motorcycle and camp in. The thing is about 5,000 lb tow. My Trooper is only rated for 3500 lb and have no info in regard to upgrade (assume the clutch/tranny is the weak link).

Now I know the Z has a weak rear suspenssion. My other fear is the weak cooling system, perhaps the rear end. Does anyone hear have any experience with towing? I'd think an LT-1 & 6 speed would be plenty stout otherwise (?)

OK it's kind of goofy. But it would be a ball to take trailer to the races, bike meets, & still have the Z to cruise.

possible or stupid crazy? what needs be fixed? (I assume the rear springs need over riders).

5000 lbs of towing with a unibody....

Think about that for a second and get back to me.

Thought about it, doesn't hurt my feelings.....but I get your point....subframe connectors? Maybe no place to mount at hitch? Other issues?

You realize that 5,000 lbs if the tow limit of even some smaller pickup trucks right? With a full frame chassis?

You will sheer the car to pieces trying to tow 5k lbs with an F-body. There's nothing you can do to "fix" it, it was never meant to be.

Re: Z-28 as a Tow Vehicle?

are you kidding me? the 19 foot boat i pull with my fullsize truck makes that thing work... i couldnt imagine pulling something almost twice that heavy with an fbody!!!!!

I dont even think you could mount that heavy of a hitch on a unibody in the first place.

The F body is a pure sports car. The gearing is completely wrong, the suspension is not designed to tow and being unibody you will like said above tear the car to pieces.

I have towed almost a full ton with my jeep cherokee and didn't have as much as a squeek. I don't know how your huge *** trooper can't tow more then 3,500 lbs...

Get yourself an LT1 b-body, the tow package on them was rated for 5000lbs with 2.93 gears, the Fleetwood tow package is HARD to find but got 3.42s and a 7000lbs rating. The chassis on these pigs dates back to basically 1978 when cars were the tow rig of choice for most campers or boaters.

And to this day I wonder why I haven't seen this '96-'97 white Z rolling through town with a big boat on a trailer heh (it was a sight) but honestly I didn't have any clue f-body's couldn't tow anything. Good luck LowRyter I hope you find what you're looking for to tow!

Just think how hard it will be to stop that much weight with the crappy LT1 brakes.

Re: Z-28 as a Tow Vehicle?

I pulled the small uhaul trailer with my Z. It was kinda fun. I went through the rocky mountains, and I accelerated up the steepest areas

But even with a small trailer, the suspension took a beating. I mean when I have one other adult in the car with me it makes a difference. With 4 adults the car is a low rider.

^This is a good point. I can tell my car feels different with a 100 lbs passenger. Let alone any kind of trailer.
