y-pipe/ plug wire question

On my rear plug wires there are heat sheilds on the boots (stock manifolds) I have MSD 8.5's going in. I also never run above 170 degrees unless I am in traffic but even then thats rare. Should I still put them back in???

I hope to have a magnaflow here soon and was going to put in a new y-pipe with the rear O2 deleted (new PCM). What O/R y-pipe will I need? The stock pipe is on there now with the 2 or three o2's or whatever.

Re: y-pipe/ plug wire question

if the car came equipped with 2 o2 sensors...you have to retain both of them. it's kindda like removing one of your eyes and asking you to function properly.
both are needed, since the car monitors A/F from each bank.

the MSDs should be fine. i know my Taylors were fine, but then again i have coated headers.

as for a ypipe. there really isn't much to be gained from the ORP honesly. i didn't notice any hp gain, just sound increase.
mine was a bassani and was good quality.

i've heard good things from the Stainless Works in summit

Keep the metal boot shields on the plugs. Also your headers run a lot higher temperature then 170 deg's. those shields are good insurance against burnt boots.

Re: y-pipe/ plug wire question

I got the rear 02 programed out (only for emissions), thats why I was wondering.

Re: y-pipe/ plug wire question

i kindda thought that's what you meant...wasn't sure.

any of the ORPs that bolt up to stock manifolds should work fine. like i said my basani was a nice piece.

HOWEVER
the reason the stock pipe is flatened is for clearance. both with the ground and with the frame. when i installed my bassani the Ypipe would hit the frame when the engine was under load (mostly 1st and 2nd under hard exceleration).

i cured this by installing poly motor mounts...WELL worth it.

came in handy later with my LTs and ORP to keep them from hitting.

Re: y-pipe/ plug wire question

The problem is with not having to use the third emmisions O2 anymore. If I got a 96 O/R pipe then I would have a hole in it for the emmisions O2
I thought that pre 96 did not have it so I could just use one of them???

I guess I could just just get a 96 and leave the O2 in there even though its not being used for anything...

Re: y-pipe/ plug wire question

I just bought a stainless works ORY for my dual cat 97 Z. (aluminized) Anyway, my ORY doesn't even have bungs for the rear O2 sensors, so no plugs required. If you did have O2 bungs, $3 and a hardware store should fix it. Enjoy!
