I am looking at a 98 TA, LS1 A4 as some of you know. I haven't actually looked at the car yet, it's like an hour and a half away, but my Dad did. He of course didn't look at the inside of the drivers door to see if it said GU2, GU5, or whatever. I emailed Pontiac with the VIN and they said the car is equipped with 2.73 gears. I am confused because the car DOES have a 1st gear selction. I thought 2.73 cars did not have a 1st gear selection?? My 96 Z28 has 2.73's, and has no 1st gear option. Is it possible that guy at Pontiac made a mistake, or did the LS1 cars have a 1st option even with the 2.73's?? Thanks for any help anyone can give!

1st gear selection rule doesn't apply to LS1s. It has 2.73s.

Yep, my car came w/2.73's and could select first gear. Gears could've been changed somewhere along the line too - my door has GU2 on it, but the rear is out of a M6 car.

Ok thanks guys! Will it be much slower than a 3.23 equipped LS1 A4? Will I notice much power difference going from a 2.73 auto LT1 (what I have now), to the 2.73 LS1? Would the LT1 actually be better for light to light acceleration that the LS1 because of its low end torque, or does the LS1 still have the advantage even with these gears?
