is it worth it to gut the cats or not?

Just wondering if there's any real performance gain or advantage to gutting the cats.

If I do it, i'm going to weld pipes straight through them.

Any opinions?

on the older 3rd gens, i would say it is worth about 10hp

so i would say it's worth it. but you'd be better off just cutting a piece of pipe to put in the cats place, so if you ever need to put the cat back on you have it.

I agree with teke...my 89' thirdgen years back reacted nicely to a good catback, headers and no cat

Just hollow them out, so at least it looks like you have one.

I'm getting my exhaust redone and i'll probably gut them and weld a pipe going straight through the cat. But i still need to pass emissions.

So maybe i could somehow have the gutted cats clamped onto the exhaust so that i could take them off and put working cats on for when i have to pass emisions.

Anyone ever do that?

i think you're going to be doing too much work
just get some high flows and call it a day

i think you can find them for about 30$ apiece and you might have to hook up a little pipe to be welded on to the cats and then the rest of the exhaust
not too much farther from what you're trying to from what it sounds like
just a suggestion
